LEADERS

Shawn Allred

Shawn Allred, pastor of First Baptist Church, Kenton, since 2016, was called as pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church, Dyersburg, on July 9.  His first Sunday was August 13. Allred has pastored churches in Tennessee and Arkansas and has been in the ministry since 1991, serving in youth, music, associate pastor and senior pastor roles. “I am excited to begin pastoring at Hillcrest Baptist Church and ministering in the harvest field of Dyersburg and surrounding areas. God is doing great things here at Hillcrest, and I know His faithfulness will continue to be evident to us as we serve this mission field together,” he said.

Brent Brewer has been called as pastor of Harvest View Baptist Church, Readyville.

Jeff Brown has been called as pastor of Jackson Ridge Baptist Church, Rockvale.

Bradleys Creek Baptist Church, Lascassas, recently called Dwayne Ewers as pastor.

Charlie Howell has been called as pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Murfreesboro.

Ronnie Smith is serving as interim pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Sale Creek.

EDUCATION

Carson-Newman University, Jefferson City, is a Tennessee VETS Campus according to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The news grants Carson-Newman the designation of having a Tennessee Veterans Education Transition Support Campus. By being a Tennessee VETS Campus, Carson-Newman prioritizes outreach to veterans and delivers services necessary to create a supportive environment where student veterans can prosper while pursuing their education. “When veterans are looking for a place to go to school after leaving the service and they see that logo on our website, they can feel confident that our university is going to do everything we can to help them be successful in school,” said Pat Bivens, C-N’s director of military and veterans services.

  • Thirteen members of Carson-Newman University’s football team made professions of faith on Aug. 25, choosing to be baptized in Mossy Creek on campus. Team players and members of the C-N community gathered on the banks of the historic creek in support. Alan Duncan, left, associate pastor of Morristown’s Manley Baptist Church, and team chaplain Marty Blakely, right, baptized the team members including C-N freshman Isaac Oglesby of Murfreesboro.
  • The Baby Comfort Station, a ministry of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Cumberland Plateau Baptist Association, was provided to attendees at the recent Cumberland County Fair. Judy Hedgecoth and Becky Bower were two of 42 volunteers from Cumberland Plateau churches who helped share the gospel during the week. The volunteers gave out 55 Bibles, 18 DVDs, 107 Christian books, 123 coloring books and crayons and 66 gospel tracks in addition to providing freezer pops, suckers, water and space for mothers to change diapers and care for their babies.
  • New Salem Baptist Church in Limestone celebrated Homecoming and 178 years of continued Kingdom ministry on Aug. 20. Troy Rust, associational missions strategist for Holston Baptist Association, delivered the morning message and his children provided special music. The culmination of the day’s celebration was the dedication of their recently renovated education building. In the Fall of 2022, with a vision for discipleship and Christian education, the congregation voted to convert its existing fellowship hall into four classrooms. Pastor Craig Ponder observed, “What Baptist church does that?” Renovations began Jan, 9 and classes first met on Sunday, June 18. Two Sunday School classes that were meeting in member’s homes are now meeting on campus. The new space is not only used on Sundays, but also on Tuesday nights by a lady’s small group and on Wednesdays by Kids in Action. Pictured are, from left, Rust; Ponder; Roy Gills, deacon chairman; and associate pastors Joe Barker and Tim Jaynes.
