Annie Armstrong said, “The future lies all before us…shall it only be a slight advance upon what we usually do? Ought it not be a bound leap forward, to attitudes of endeavor and success undreamed of before?”
Every new venture starts with excitement for the possibilities ahead. That’s where I am today. I’m ready for a “bound leap forward,” anticipating what God will accomplish through Tennessee Baptists and the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board (TBMB).
The foundation is strong. Your TBMB recently completed a reorganization designed to support the ministries Tennessee Baptists identified over two years through the Acts 2:17 Initiative. This initiative was a literal call for God to show us a vision for “undreamed-of endeavors.”
To succeed, we know we must foster a like-minded organizational culture within the TBMB. The new TBMB launched two weeks ago with a clear mission to “serve churches by multiplying gospel leaders.” Our priorities are straightforward yet bold – strengthening and multiplying gospel leaders, evangelistic disciples, and healthy churches.
During our February staff meeting, I outlined 10 core principles shaping how we will serve you, and I would like to share them to ensure you know the vision we’re striving toward.
10 Core Principles of the TBMB
- Our mission matters most
“To serve churches by multiplying gospel leaders” is not just a slogan. It is the driving force behind everything we do. This mission will guide us in taking leaps forward to achieve undreamed-of Kingdom success in Tennessee and around the world.
- We will embody the role of ambassadors
We represent the TBMB, the churches we serve, ourselves, and – most importantly – Christ, our Savior. We go as His ambassadors and for your benefit.
- We will encourage next-level learning
Innovation is one of our core values. Collaboration, based on the biblical model, is key. We firmly believe that none of us is smarter than all of us together.
- We will demonstrate mutual respect
We will value every individual as a “10” and extend respect to everyone, no matter who they are or how they treat us. We firmly remember that Jesus died for every person.
- We will practice clear communication
Clear, frequent communication is the foundation of successful collaboration. By respecting one another through timely responses and clarity, we will effectively work with urgency and purpose.
- We will cultivate a culture rooted in prayer
Every decision and action we take will be saturated with prayer. We are committed to praying for one another, our churches, and Tennessee Baptist ministers.
- We will celebrate victories
The work of ministry is demanding, which makes celebrating even small victories essential. Every win is a Kingdom triumph.
- We will share each other’s burdens in love
Though we are a denominational team, we are also a Kingdom family. When one of us hurts, we all hurt. We will uphold one another in love and compassion.
- We will uphold healthy accountability
Clear expectations and honest feedback are fundamental aspects of accountability. Through coaching, encouragement, and constructive guidance, we will maintain focus on serving churches to the best of our abilities.
- We will embody a second-mile mindset
We strive to be selfless employees, going above and beyond in all that we do. We are inspired by Claude Bissell, former University of Toronto president, who said, “Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible.” Simply put, whatever we do — in word or deed — will be done in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
A Clear Commitment to You
Why share these 10 principles? Simple — we want you to know we are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to support your success. We invite you to hold us accountable to these principles as we walk alongside your churches.
The Acts 2:17 Initiative displayed Tennessee Baptists’ dedication, and we will match that effort. I believe we stand poised to see an unprecedented movement of God in our churches and across our state.
The future lies before us, and I believe it reflects God’s vision for the Tennessee Baptist community. I consider it a joy to be on this journey with you. B&R
