BIG EMORY CHURCHES UNITE FOR JOINT REVIVALS

September 30, 2024

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist & Reflector

Sam Leslie, minister of music at South Harriman Baptist Church, leads a combined associational choir during Big Emory’s recent “Night of Worship” following simultaneous revivals from 34 of the association’s 51 churches.

HARRIMAN — Approximately two-thirds of the 51 churches in Big Emory Baptist Association joined together Aug. 25-28 to plant gospel seeds in their communities.

The 34 churches that participated were divided into 10 different groups, said Matt Cannon, director of missions for the association.

From Sunday through Wednesday nights, each group held a revival service at one of the churches in the group with a pastor from a different church bringing the message, Cannon explained.

On Thursday night, all the groups gathered at South Harriman Baptist Church for an association-wide “Night of Worship” led by Roc Collins, director of strategic objectives for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board and a combined choir from members of the association’s churches.  [Read more…]

OCT. 6: PURPOSE EXEMPLIFIED

September 30, 2024

By Joshua Moore
Pastor, First Baptist Church, Sharon

Focal Passage: Philippians 1:1-11

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeThe final study on God’s purpose for His people focuses on the importance of ministry partnerships and glorifying God through consistent and lifelong service to the kingdom of God.

Give thanks for ministry partnership. The book of Philippians is often called the Letter of Joy, but Paul wrote it while a prisoner. Philippi was a city in Macedonia (northern Greece) that had a thriving church despite poverty and persecution. Paul spoke highly of the Philippians and other Macedonian churches saying, “their abundant joy and their extreme poverty overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.” (II Corinthians 8:2)

Paul had served and suffered with this congregation and he expressed his deep gratitude to them in this letter.  He witnessed how God used them for great acts of generosity and ministry despite their difficult circumstances.  In these initial comments of this letter, Paul illustrates the great joy found in the fellowship of service in Christian ministry. God’s purpose for believers is exemplified through intentional, incarnational ministry. We live in a hyper-individualized society where many believe they can demonstrate their Christian faith simply by watching sermons, listening to Christian music, maintaining private devotion or viewing Christian based videos. September 29, 2024

By Baptist and Reflector

FRANKLIN — Continuing their response efforts after Hurricane Helene’s devastating output, Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief will be setting up two incident command posts in the coming days.

One post will be stationed at First Baptist Church, Dandridge, and Tennessee volunteers will be working out of that area covering Jefferson and Cocke counties. TBDR will be feeding with Salvation Army, and Tennessee chain saw and flood recovery teams will be working out of that site.

An additional incident command post will be set up in Johnson City, covering Washington and Unicoi Counties. Wes Jones, disaster relief specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board, is still working on determining the location for this post. Texans on Mission will operate that incident command and the feeding area, and the Salvation Army will also be working with the feeding team. RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGES FOR 2024 SUMMIT

September 26, 2024

By David Dawson
Communications specialist, TBMB

FRANKLIN —  In efforts to keep the focus of the 2024 annual meeting on celebrating the Tennessee Baptist Convention’s 150th anniversary, the TBC Resolutions Committee affirmed the following recommendations for the 2024 Summit:

• A request that resolutions come to the committee no later than 15 days before the meeting.

• A request that only resolutions regarding thanks and appreciation be submitted.

The Committee also notes a limited time in the business session when resolutions might be considered.

Dennis Trull, pastor of First Baptist Church, McKenzie, serves as chair of the Resolutions Committee. Trull led the recent committee meeting, which was held via Zoom, and said the recommendations were made to reflect the spirit of celebration that TBC leadership is desiring.

“I think everything at Summit is going to be hinging on — or at least connecting back to — the 150-year celebration,” said Trull. “So, we just want this (the recommendations segment of the meeting) to be a season of being positive and being grateful for the 150 years of ministry and the history of the TBC. … It’s really a unifying thing we’re trying to promote. That’s the focus, the intention, of what we were going for.”  [Read more…]

B&R EDITOR PUBLISHES COLLECTION OF HIS COLUMNS

September 24, 2024

By David Dawson
Communications specialist, TBMB

FRANKLIN — Lonnie Wilkey’s tenure as editor of the Baptist and Reflector is coming to an end, but his columns will continue to be read for years to come.

Wilkey, who has been with the B&R since 1988 and has served as editor since 1998, has put together a collection of his columns in a book titled Faith, Family and Life’s Lessons: Reflections of a Christian Journalist.

Wilkey’s columns have won a stream of awards through the years, including a number of first-place honors in the annual Baptist Communicators Association publications contest. The new book includes more than 70 of Wilkey’s columns.

“During my career, God has allowed me to write countless news and feature articles, but the personal columns I wrote always seemed to draw the most attention,” said Wilkey. “I tried to keep them real, drawing from lessons I was learning ‘on the job’ in life as a husband, parent, layman in my local church and in my career as a writer.”  [Read more…]

SEPT. 29: KINGDOM WORK

September 23, 2024

By Darrell Nimmo
Retired Tennessee pastor

Focal Passage: Acts 15:39-16:10

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleSometimes things happen, which at the time, seems to be devastating. However, later we discover was the best thing that could have happened. Let me give you an example. There was a church that was strong and healthy in the community in which I lived. It was an evangelical church, and had a strong presence in our town.

An issue arose over the use of musical instruments in worship. Some of the congregation wanted to expand their use in worship, others wanted to limit their use in worship.

Soon, the church developed divisions within the fellowship with each side refusing to relinquish their position. As a result, one part of the congregation broke from the other an began another church just a few miles down the road from the original church. It looked like a terrible unfortunate situation.

Everyone in the community watched with great interest to see what was going to happen. However, what did happen surprised everyone. Both churches began to grow. Now, where there was only one church, there are now two healthy, strong and growing congregations. Sometimes, what seems to be an unfortunate disaster, God is re-shaping His kingdom work.  [Read more…]

SEPT. 29: PURPOSE EXPRESSED

September 23, 2024

By Joshua Moore
Pastor, First Baptist Church, Sharon

Focal Passages: Galatians 6:1-10

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeAs we live out God’s will for our lives through embodying the fruit of the Holy Spirit, God’s purpose expresses itself in how we relate to others, especially those who belong to the household of faith.

Restore and share burdens. It’s easy for us to point fingers, gossip and quietly revel in the moral failures of others. Southern Baptists are experts at this, unfortunately.

We might couch it in a concerning tone, or the ubiquitous phrase, “Bless his/her heart,” proceeding then to speak ill and stand indignant over others’ missteps.  [Read more…]

BREAKING: GAINES TO TRANSITION TO NEW ROLE

September 22, 2024

By Baptist and Reflector

Steve Gaines.

CORDOVA — Steve Gaines, senior pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova and a former SBC president, announced to the congregation on Sunday that he will be transitioning out of his role of senior pastor and into the role of “itinerate preacher.”

Gaines, who has been at Bellevue for 19 years, was joined on stage by his wife, Donna, when he made the announcement.

“Many years ago, the Lord spoke to my heart that he would one day want me to serve as an itinerate preacher,” said Gaines. “That simply means that I would travel and minister at different churches instead of serving as pastor of one church.” [Read more…]
