BCM at APSU Recognized

April 29, 2014

By Lonnie Wilkey

CLARKSVILLE — Before the fall semester started at Austin Peay State University here last year, the leadership team of Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) was more concerned about being servants on campus than winning awards.

But when all was said and done, they did both.

The Tennessee Baptist Convention-sponsored Baptist Collegiate Ministries was recently honored on campus as “Student Organization of the Year.” In addition, the BCM received the “Outstanding Community Service” award.

Being tapped as the top organization on campus is no small accomplishment, according to Stacy Murphree, BCM director at Austin Peay. “It typically does not go to a ministry organization,” she said. [Read more…]

Trusting God Through the Uncertainties of Life

April 16, 2014

By Jenna Fleming
Writer/Member, Union Avenue Baptist Church

It was a year ago that I miscarried our third child. A strong heartbeat one week became faint and irregular a couple weeks later. The ultrasound room was darker than normal on that day. I have two healthy girls, and I know how a “normal” pregnancy is supposed to go, so when the ultrasound tech struggled to find my baby’s heartbeat only to call my doctor in, it was new and shocking for me. A positive pregnancy test should result in a live baby. Right?!

Fast forward to late summer. I got another positive pregnancy test, but I was prepared this time. Guarded. My former naïve optimism was now a cautious longing for a good outcome, i.e. healthy, live baby. This time, though, I didn’t even make it to my first OB appointment. I miscarried at home and relived the grief I had earlier that spring.

I wanted answers. A solution. [Read more…]

The Empty Tomb — Symbol of Hope for Eternity

April 16, 2014

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist and Reflector

When we think of Easter, usually two images come to mind — the Cross and the empty tomb.

Both are important and are visual reminders of the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for you and me.

My personal favorite is that of the empty tomb.

The empty tomb symbolizes our hope for eternity. [Read more…]

The Cooperative Program and Overpasses

April 15, 2014

By Randy C. Davis
TBC Executive Director

I’ll never again drive across the overpasses heading into downtown Chattanooga without thinking about Tree Man Smith, God’s determined love for the destitute, and the Cooperative Program.

Tree Man — or “Tree” as his friends call him — is homeless and has been since 2004. The refuge taken under Chattanooga’s many overpasses has been his only protection from the elements. Tree is nicknamed “Tree Man” because he ran a tree removal service for a number of years.

But the line between the Haves and Have Nots is thinner than you might think. A blown engine rod in his truck, clients that didn’t pay, and stolen tools is all it takes to go from scratching out a living to clawing for survival. Tree is definitely a survivor. [Read more…]

Baptist Support Sought for ‘Yes on 1’

April 15, 2014

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist and Reflector

BRENTWOOD — The state of Tennessee has become a destination for women intent on having an abortion.

According to information provided by “Yes on 1,” Tennessee is the third leading state in the nation in providing abortions to women who live outside the state. In addition, one out of every four abortions in Tennessee are on out-of-state women.

Yes on 1 is a non-profit organization established to educate Tennessee voters about an upcoming amendment on the Tennessee ballot on Nov. 4, said Myra Simons, president of Yes on 1.

The effort is called Yes on 1 because there will be four constitutional amendments on the state ballot in November and the one dealing with abortion is the first one listed. [Read more…]

Baptists Offer Hope for Homeless

April 15, 2014

By Chris Turner
Director of Communications, TBC

“Tree Man” Smith has been homeless for nine years after losing his tree removal business. However, through the ministry of Jimmy Turner, Smith accepted Christ last fall, was baptized, and is now reaching out to other homeless people with the gospel.

CHATTANOOGA — Jimmy Turner practically glides across the large, chunky quarry rock scattered under an overpass to prevent erosion. Navigating the rock isn’t easy, but Turner navigated a lot harder in the Marine Corps. Of course in the Marine Corps Turner never approached an enemy camp with a bag of sausage biscuits in one hand and a jug of orange juice in the other.

Truth is, Turner has crossed these rocks so many times it’s a wonder he hasn’t already worn a path across them. And it isn’t an enemy camp he’s stalking, it’s a homeless camp where a few guys huddle in obscurity with no hope, fight for survival, and remain unknown to most of the world. [Read more…]
