ANSWERING THE CALL IN ASIA

December 7, 2018

Jackson pastor leads Hispanic mission team to other side of globe

Jackson pastor Daniel Tuchez has been making a difference in Southeast Asia, according to an official with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board. Tuchez was featured in the IMB’s Week of Prayer for International Missions.

Editor’s Note: The Week of Prayer for International Missions is underway through Dec. 9. Every December since 1888, the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering has empowered Southern Baptists’ international missions work. The goal for this year’s Lottie Moon offering is $160 million.

By Grace Thornton
Writer, International Mission Board

RICHMOND, Va.  — Daniel Tuchez remembers the day he got the call.

“Jason called me and said, ‘I need you to pray about this city in Southeast Asia, because it is going to be opening up, and maybe there are opportunities,” relayed Tuchez, who serves as pastor of Iglesia Bautista El Shaddai in Jackson, Tenn.

It was a big deal. But the call itself wasn’t a surprise. In the years before, Tuchez had accompanied Jason Carlisle, the IMB’s director of Hispanic mobilization, on many trips. [Read more…]

SIMPLIFYING CHRISTMAS

December 6, 2018

By Matt Tullos
Stewardship Development Specialist, TBMB

Holidays can get complicated. If we don’t pay attention our debt grows, our peace shrinks and our stress expands. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are six ways you can make Christmas a simpler, more beautiful season:

(1) Heighten your gratitude. Paul reminds us that anxiety and gratitude don’t mix: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6). [Read more…]

GOD’S PUZZLE PIECES

December 5, 2018

Before it Hits the PressHave you ever worked a puzzle? Most people have. I am not a huge puzzle fan (large puzzles for preschoolers are my limit), but my grandfather (Pop) loved puzzles — and the more pieces the puzzle had, the better he liked it. He built a puzzle board (a large flat piece of plywood normally) and spend hours in the winter (he didn’t have time for puzzles in the summer) putting puzzles together.

I remember watching him. Pop would construct the boundaries of the puzzle first, then start piecing it together. It took a lot concentration and patience, but before long, the puzzle took shape and soon he would have it finished, ready to be framed in a homemade frame that he would make. [Read more…]

CARSON SPRINGS EVENT SETS TONE FOR CHRISTMAS SEASON

December 5, 2018

By Carla Harper
Contributing Writer, B&R

Emily Terrell of First Baptist Church, Dandridge, recently encouraged participants at the annual Christmas in November Women’s Luncheon, sponsored by Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center in Newport.

NEWPORT  — “All is Calm. All is Bright” was the theme for the annual Christmas in November Women’s Luncheon held Nov. 10 at Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center in Newport.

Kevin Perrigan, manager of Carson Springs, and his wife, Debra, have sponsored the event since they first came to Carson Springs 11 years ago.

“We continue this tradition each year because it continues to have an impact. We continue to see results. Women come back and bring friends with them each year. Women tell us they have a good time; and more importantly, they have told us that it helps them get their mind set on Christ before the holidays get them too busy to get distracted from what Christmas is really about,” Perrigan said. NEAR-TRAGIC INCIDENT BECOMES WITNESSING TOOL

Ripley pastor Rocky Gilliam uses nail gun accident to generate gospel conversations

By David Dawson

RIPLEY  — Rocky Gilliam might have the most unique evangelism method in history.

Not many people, after all, can use a personal story about being shot in the head with a nail gun as a segway into sharing the gospel.

But Gilliam, pastor of Spirit Filled Baptist Church church in Ripley, believes the traumatic experience — when a three-inch nail was accidentally driven into his skull last November — is a great example of God’s providence.

Gilliam has, in fact, turned the horror story into a love story, and uses the details of the incident to point people to Jesus. [Read more…]

While serving as director of communications for the Education Commission I had the privilege and opportunity to write for Baptist Press on occasion and work in the newsroom during the annual meeting. [Read more…]

HOW WILL YOU RESPOND TO LOTTIE’S CHALLENGE?

December 4, 2018

By Randy C. Davis
TBMB President & Executive Director

Time passes, transitions happen, and generations come and go, but I pray we as Southern Baptists never lose the missionary spirit of Charlotte Digges “Lottie” Moon.

Lottie Moon stood no taller than 4 feet 6 inches tall, but she cast a shadow that’s stretched for more than 100 years. Lottie left for China in the early 1880’s and gave 39 years and her life – literally – to the Chinese people as a teacher and evangelist. Among her monumental Kingdom contributions was the foundation she laid for support of international missions among Southern Baptists through a special offering. [Read more…]
