Roan Park Baptist receives $400,000 grant after Helene havoc

Note: This story is a follow-up to the article “Parking Lot Is Gone, but Hope Remains in Place,” written by the B&R last November. The story can be viewed here.

After dipping into their savings to repave their parking lot, the members of Roan Park Baptist watched the investment wash away during Hurricane Helene last September.

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Two weeks after Roan Park Baptist Church spent $20,000 from its savings to pave its parking lot, Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters washed it all away.

The small congregation of about 15 members now faces a different future — one funded by a $400,000 grant from Samaritan’s Purse that will help rebuild not just their parking lot, but their entire ministry.

“We’re hoping to rebuild the church and then rebuild the congregation,” said Jerry Moore, a deacon coordinating repair efforts at the church. [Read more…]

NEWPORT — Like he’s done so many times before, pastor Tim Grooms went to the pulpit at Riverview Baptist Church at the start of Sunday’s service and offered words of welcome to those in attendance.

But this was no ordinary welcome. This was a welcome back.

On the morning of April 13, Riverview Baptist Church held a grand reopening, hosting morning worship for the first time since last September, when storms and subsequent flooding from Hurricane Helene tore through the area and blasted the church campus. [Read more…]

By 10:30 the next morning, the Nolichucky River had swollen to waist depth. [Read more…]

Some of the men from Westside Baptist help to load supplies for disaster relief in East Tennessee and North Carolina. According to pastor Dwight Torbettt, the church has allotted donations and other financial resources from as far away as Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida.

MADISONVILLE — Even long after Hurricane Helene’s devastating winds subsided, Tennessee Baptist volunteers can still be found restoring hope in East Tennessee.

Westside Baptist Church in Madisonville is one of those churches serving as a beacon of sustained commitment.

“When the hurricane hit up there, I called off services that Sunday night and we went to our mission building — which we built two years ago — just to start boxing up what we had, food, clothes, whatever we had to take up there,” pastor Dwight Torbett explained.

As a congregation of around 100 people, the church has placed 45 campers with families — many of whom are still living in tents — as well as delivered 33 trailer loads of supplies (like food, clothes, and hygiene products).

Located about halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga, Westside’s reach has been felt hundreds of miles  away. Torbett said they’ve logged over 60,000 driving miles over four months. [Read more…]
