CHURCHES EXEMPLIFY RACE RELATIONS

January 27, 2017

They stood together at the pulpit of Rialto Baptist Church in Covington on Sunday, Jan. 15 — Thomas Bester, a 63-year-old African-American pastor, and Carl Funderburk, an almost 80-year-old Anglo pastor.

As I watched them I could only imagine the stories they could tell from having witnessed first hand the racial strife of the civil rights movement in the 1960s-70s. On this occasion, however, these two pastors were united under the spirit of the God that both have faithfully served for decades. [Read more…]

HOW MUCH LIGHT IS ENOUGH TO OVERCOME DARKNESS?

January 25, 2017

By Johnnie Godwin
Contributing Columnist, Baptist and Reflector

light-at-end-of-dark-tunnelBeneath Godwin’s Mountain, I own a cave that the state of Tennessee refers to as a significant cave. When I was a church’s interim pastor, listeners heard me tell about the cave’s darkness, depths, and dangers — along with its magnificence. A deacon and a high school boy persisted in wanting me to take them on a cave expedition. Finally, I happily agreed to do that with strong caveats: namely, two powerful lights each, water, snacks, proper clothing, etc.

An expedition lacking in light. On a Saturday morning, the three of us drove to the cave. Before we entered the first room of the cave, I checked equipment. To my dismay, I found the deacon had only his grandson’s toy flashlight with no backup. The senior high boy had a flashlight with weak batteries and a backup birthday candle. I knew the cave well and had two powerful sources of light with fresh batteries so I decided to lead them an hour or so.  [Read more…]

INAUGURATION DAY: THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE

January 24, 2017

By Steve Gaines
SBC President & Pastor, Bellevue Baptist Church, Cordova

Steve Gaines

Today (Jan. 20)  Donald J. Trump became the 45th President of the United States. As you know, Mr. Trump won a highly volatile election last November. Some see him as a candidate of much-needed change, readily resonating with his Reaganish slogan, “Make America Great Again!” Others see Mr. Trump as a less than desirable candidate for the highest office in the land.

What are Southern Baptists to do?

Trump won the election. In doing so, he earned the right to serve for the next four years as President of the United States. Consequently, it is incumbent upon every Bible-believing Christian to pray that the Lord will bless and guide him and his family in the coming days and years. [Read more…]

STILL ANSWERING THE CALL IN TIME OF NEED

January 23, 2017

TBMB Executive Director

The news media may have moved on, and that’s okay. As we say, Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers get there when the disaster hits and stay long after the media has left.

And that’s definitely the case in Sevier County where November’s wildfires devastated countless homes, businesses, and woodlands. Tennessee Baptists have been well represented as hundreds of committed volunteers have served — and continue to serve — thousands in their time of need.  [Read more…]

CONFESSIONS OF A WHITE BOY ON MLK JR. DAY

January 16, 2017

By Chris Turner
Director of Communications, TBMB

martin-luther-kingConfession One: I struggle with racial prejudice against blacks.

There, I said it. God has consistently convicted me of that and increasingly helped me let a lot of that go over the past 20 years. It occasionally rises up, but He reminds me that racial prejudice is rooted in pride, one race believing it is superior to other races, and that in His eyes, all men are truly created equal since He created all men. A FAITHFUL SERVANT

January 16, 2017

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist and Reflector

170116garyI walked into the offices of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board (formerly the Executive Board) on Jan. 3 after nearly two weeks of rest and relaxation (if spending a week of it with two boys ages 4 and almost 2 can be relaxing). But it was definitely fun and exciting.

As fellow staff members arrived in the office we exchanged greetings and talked about the holidays. I then realized that one staff member with whom I had worked for 25 years would not be coming into the office that day.

Gary Rickman retired from the TBMB staff on Dec. 31 after serving the convention in numerous roles over the years, most recently as director of strategic relations. That was definitely an appropriate title for Gary. [Read more…]

PRIORITIZE EVANGELISM DESPITE DISTRACTIONS

January 13, 2017

By Ernest L. Easley
Evangelism Professor, Union University, Jackson

priorities-list-chalkboardA busy pastor recently asked me how to keep the main focus on evangelism while meeting all the other demands and distractions of church life.

Having served as a lead pastor for more than 30 years, I understand that frustration. I sometimes struggled to have any energy or drive left for evangelism after seemingly giving it all toward shepherding the flock.

So how do busy pastors and church leaders keep evangelism a priority with all the challenges and distractions? I have found these four ways helpful: [Read more…]

HELP CAN HURT

January 12, 2017

I recently came across an article on the International Mission Board website (www.imb.org) by former president Jerry Rankin. The title immediately caught my attention: “Help that Hurts: Considering the Long-Term Cost of Missions Subsidy.”

Rankin observed: “We have made many mistakes over the years of missions work around the world. One of the errors has been trying to accelerate growth by an infusion of financial aid to build churches and support pastors. The result almost invariably was a welfare mentality among the recipients of the support.”

Jerry Rankin understands missions. In addition to serving as president of the IMB for 17 years, he and his wife were missionaries for 23 years prior to that. [Read more…]

FORGET THE RESOLUTIONS; OBEY SCRIPTURE

January 12, 2017

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist and Reflector

new-years-resolutions-notesAs January gets into full swing, people are excited about a new year and new opportunities. No doubt Tennessee Baptists are among the millions who made “resolutions” for the new year, ranging from losing weight to reading your Bible daily to countless other things that individuals deem important.

Hopefully, those who made resolutions will be able to keep them. I don’t make many resolutions anymore. I have a standard resolution that my doctor keeps before me every time I go visit him — lose weight. Haven’t been very successful on that one so I decided to limit my resolutions until I can meet the one I most need to meet.

During worship service on Jan. 1 at Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Old Hickory, Gerald Bontrager offered a novel idea. Instead of making resolutions, follow Scripture. Pastor Gerald provided a “spiritual reference guide for living out the gospel” in 2017. [Read more…]

THE ‘POST-CHRISTMAS’ QUESTION FOR CHRISTIANS

January 11, 2017

By Steve Freeman
President, Tennessee Baptist Convention

Steve Freeman

Steve Freeman

Hello Tennessee Baptists!

Another Christmas season is in the books! If your experience is anything like mine, it seems as though Christmas rolls around much faster each year and before you know it — it’s all over! The excitement and anticipation of the season is a wonderful experience … then it’s all done! Life simply returns to “normal” and the normal “everyday” routine seeps back into our lives. The “post-Christmas” question is “what are we supposed to do now?” This is why I am so thankful for the Bible because it provides for us, as God’s children, every answer to every question that we may have in our lives. This certainly includes an answer to the “post-Christmas” question!

Consider the “excitement” of the first Christmas — after the long-awaited and prophesied Messiah had been conceived in the virgin womb of His chosen mother, after Mary and Joseph had persevered through the scandalous scrutiny of “being found with Child” during their engagement, after the long-awaited and anticipated birth of their unique first-born Son, and after the appearance of the angelic hosts announcing the birth of Jesus to wise men from the East and shepherds “abiding in their fields keeping watch over their flock by night” prompting them to “go straight to Bethlehem then and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us” (Luke 2:1-15, Matthew 2:1-2).
