KORAN LEADS MAN TO CHRIST (WELL, NOT EXACTLY)

February 15, 2016

Editor’s note: Due to safety concerns about the Muslim who accepted Christ and his family, the name of the author has been withheld.

Koran, mosque, lectern, shadowsAn Arabic-speaking Christian friend brought a new believer to meet me. The man, who I’ll call Alvey, was a former Muslim who wanted to be baptized. My friend thought it would be a good idea to make sure Alvey understood what it meant to become a follower of Jesus.

I listened to Alvey’s story and my interest was piqued when he talked about the shortcomings of the Koran. “I was raised a Muslim and came to the U.S. a long time ago. Because I drove a truck for a living, I listened to tapes of Islamic teaching. The more I listened, the more I questioned. There were so many holes in the teaching.” [Read more…]

UNDECIDED A POOR CHOICE IN 2016

February 10, 2016

By Lonnie Wilkey

vote-ribbonHere is a B&R article on the 2016 presidential election that examines which candidates Protestant pastors would vote for if the election were held today. Keep in mind this survey was conducted only of ministers, not the general population, but it’s still revealing.

Pastors were able to provide answers depending on whether they are Republicans or Democrats.

For Republicans, the overwhelming winner was not Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, or Donald Trump. The winner by a wide margin was “Undecided” with 39 percent. [Read more…]

DOES SATAN KEEP YOU OUT OF THE BIBLE?

February 10, 2016

A melancholy fact: Most Christians do not have a Bible reading plan. Most Christians do not read their Bibles regularly. And some church leaders do not read their Bibles. I happen to know more than I care to reveal about how many famous Christians and leaders have not read the Bible through at all.

Bethan Lloyd-Jones, wife of the late Martyn Lloyd-Jones, made a gripping observation about C.S. Lewis’ book The Screwtape Letters, a brilliant satire that includes among other things how the devil tempts new Christians. She lamented that one huge thing Lewis left out was how the devil wants to keep people from reading their Bibles. I agree; it would have been so helpful had Lewis put that in. [Read more…]

COMBATTING PORNOGRAPHY REQUIRES PARENTS

Students today are facing a challenge that we cannot relate to, and the sooner we realize this, the better. For many believing teenagers, this challenge is a heavy burden that causes them to feel dread, guilt, and isolation.

Access to pornography has never been so widely available to any other generation in history. Even in the late 1990s my exposure to pornography was limited. Any student with a smart phone has access to millions upon millions of pornographic images at the touch of a screen.

I have worked with adolescents for over 10 years, and have talked with countless students and parents about this problem. [Read more…]

15 STEPS TO BECOMING A FAMILY-FRIENDLY CHURCH

February 9, 2016

Imagine the scene as the Farr family arrives at church. Mr. Farr goes to a men’s Sunday School class on the third floor of the building. Mrs. Farr says, “I’ll meet you in the worship center after Sunday School,” and turns down the preschool hallway, where she teaches a three-year-old class. Molly, 14 years old, heads to the second floor to the youth class, and Joseph, the third grade son, runs in a different direction for his Sunday School class. And this is a church that promotes itself as being a family-friendly church! Churches must seek to minister to families as families and not just as individuals who ride to church in the same car.

What steps can your congregation take to become a family-friendly church? [Read more…]

SOULS RATHER THAN SCORES

Before it Hits the PressLifeWay Research released a new poll on Feb. 3 asking the question, “Does God care who wins the Super Bowl?

Surprisingly, one in 10 actually thinks God cares whether this year’s Super Bowl will be won by the Denver Broncos or the Carolina Panthers. One in 20 say they don’t know. [Read more…]

ARE PASTORS NEGLECTING A GREAT MISSION?

February 3, 2016

By Bradford Smith

Until recently, I’d never heard a sermon on adoption. A great multitude languishes right in our very midst, devoid of hope, desperate in affliction, and ignorant of the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. Who will be the one to deliver the words of life to the orphan, even by proxy? This is a great gospel issue.

Here is the logic. Pastors desire to reach the lost with the gospel. Many (most) of the lost are unchurched and statistically unlikely to repent as an adult. Yet, every year, we “graduate” thousands of unchurched children into adulthood via the foster system, swelling the ranks of those least likely to repent. [Read more…]

APATHY, BUSYNESS HURT EVANGELISM

February 1, 2016

The Fellowship of Tennessee Baptist Evangelists met last week at First Baptist Church in Joelton.

Sad to say, very few people attended though the meeting was publicized.

That is no reflection on the organization. It is made up of some of God’s choice servants – men and women who have dedicated themselves to the biblical call to be an evangelist.

The attendance can be attributed primarily to the twin sins of apathy and busyness. [Read more…]

2016 RESOLUTIONS? YOU NEED A TIPPING POINT!

January 29, 2016

Johnnie Godwin

You will never amount to more than you do right now unless a “tipping point” revolutionizes your life! In other words, your New Year’s resolutions and other resolutions are as futile as trying to keep all the Law to get saved. You’ll never get saved by trying to keep endless laws because salvation comes only “by grace through faith” when a person “repents” (Ephesians 2:8-10; Mark 1:15; John 3:1-18). That’s why one cliché stands out with truth: namely, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” As human beings, “inertia” is our spiritual nature: We tend to stay the same or change!

What I’m really writing about is repentance with the most literal meanings from its Greek word: which is “change of mind.” Until there is a change of mind so radical that it is like getting born again, we will likely keep on with old habits and old ways and the direction of all mankind cycle on till death. But besides the eternal tipping point of trusting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and getting saved by grace through faith, other tipping points can and have to occur if we change and move toward our potential. IMB: MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS

January 28, 2016

By Lonnie Wilkey

Earlier this year when the Southern Baptist International Mission Board announced that it needed to eliminate 600-800 positions, Southern Baptists were saddened and shocked.

IMB leaders have allowed the idea to propagate among Southern Baptists that there is a financial shortfall. The cutbacks did not occur because Southern Baptists didn’t give. Cooperative Program giving on the national level has increased in small increments over the past few years and the IMB gets the largest percentage of that offering. Just three years ago (2013), Southern Baptists gave more than $154 million to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, a record amount. Gifts topped $153 million the following year. In addition, the TBC began moving in 2011 toward a 50-50 distribution of wealth for Cooperative Program funds. This is resulting in hundreds of thousands of more dollars being funneled out of Tennessee and through the SBC for Great Commission causes. When the cutbacks were announced IMB leaders acknowledged that they had overspent millions of dollars over the past few years. Throwing more money at something won’t help it until the main problem of managing its money is corrected. [Read more…]
