July 19: Return to God

July 14, 2015

Focal Passage: Jonah 1:1-3; 3:1-5, 10

This week’s lesson begins a new unit of study related to awakening and renewal. The story of Jonah exhibits renewal in the life of Jonah, and awakening among the people of Nineveh. I like to think of the story of Jonah as it relates to the greatest commandment. Jesus quotes the Old Testament law, and then challenges His followers to go one step further, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and “your neighbor as yourself,” (Luke 10:25-27).

Jonah is the story of Ninevite neighbors. All of us, if we are really honest, could think of at least one individual, or group of people, in our lives of whom we would say, “They don’t deserve to hear the good news of salvation.” That may be our own feeling, but it is NOT the feeling of God our Father. Peter says of Him, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) [Read more…]

July 5: Work Through Conflict

Focal Passage: Joshua 22:11-12, 15-18, 26-27, 33-34

Some of us have a tendency to assume the worst. This can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. I have considered writing a book about some of the interesting disagreements that have happened in churches. In this account from the history of God’s people, an action that was intended as good led to the assumption that God’s law had been overlooked. The sons of Israel were concerned that the actions of the tribes east of the Jordan were going to bring judgment on the whole nation.

Jumping to conclusions (vv. 11-12). A well intentioned act on the part of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh was misunderstood by the rest of the sons of Israel. God had been very specific about worshipping false gods. Apparently a memorial had been set up near the west bank of the Jordan River (technically not the property of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh). July 5: Real Love

Focal Passage: I John 4:7-21

Many years ago there was a secular rock song entitled “I Want To Know What Love Is.” If that artist really wanted to know he should have checked I John 4:7-21 for the answer. John “the beloved” defines in absolute terms what love really is for his readers. However, centuries later we still really don’t know the love described by John. If you were to listen to the average American, you would think they are in love with everything. We have so cheapened the word that we are in need of a refresher course. John is the perfect one to give it to us.

John starts by sharing some key facts about love as it relates to God. He tells us in verse 7 that God is the source of love. You cannot fully love unless you fully know God. He tells them that love is a sign that we know God. Some might argue how unbelievers can really express love. The ability to do this originates with God and is a result of them being created in His image. Believers have the ability to love as God loves because of their relationship to Him. This will be the sign that sets believers apart because unconditional love is virtually unknown in today’s society. John states in verse 8, that people who are unable to love like that have not experienced a life- changing encounter with God. [Read more…]

June 28: Is This of God?

Focal Passage: I John 4:1-6

The old Verizon phone commercial asked people the question, “Can you hear me?” The question that John wants his readers to ask is, “Should we hear you?” John wanted to prepare his readers to be able to discern between those who taught the truth and those who did not. They needed to have their spiritual antennas up to make sure they were hearing the truth.

One of the grave dangers is to believe everything that you hear. John encourages his readers not to do this. The word “spirit” could refer to teachers who espoused a teaching they claimed they had received from a spirit. He challenged them to remember that just because someone claims to be spiritual does not mean they are. Just because someone has a Bible does not make them a preacher. The key is what they have to say. John admonished his readers to search the Scriptures to see if their teaching agrees with the Bible. The reason for this is because there were so many false prophets among them. His readers had experienced this themselves when some left their fellowship (I John 2:19). [Read more…]

June 28: Move Beyond Failure

Focal Passage: Joshua 7:13-15, 19-21, 25-26; 8:1

I remember those days playing high school football when occasionally the whole team was required to run extra laps because of the infraction of one player. At the time this didn’t always seem “fair.” However, at this stage of life I understand the team mentality our coaches were trying to instill in us. Our actions as individuals do affect others. Especially when it comes to Kingdom living. This event in the life of God’s people is a stark reminder of our corporate responsibility. It also teaches us that failure needn’t stall us toward our purpose. Through God’s grace and mercy we can deal with failure and keep moving forward. [Read more…]

June 21: Dangers to Avoid

Focal Passage: I John 2:15-27

Many years ago, I took a youth group white water rafting down the Ocoee River. Shortly after starting our guide fell out of the boat. You can imagine my shock and horror at the thought of trying to navigate this river without our guide. Fortunately, we were able to get the guide back in the boat and continue down the river. John’s readers are fortunate to have him as their guide to navigate the difficult issues that are mentioned in this passage.

The first difficult issue John guides them through is their relationship with the world system. John says you cannot love God and the world at the same time. I once saw a lady on a bumper boat; she stepped on the concrete to get out while the boat went in the opposite direction. She had the choice to get wet or fall on the concrete. The bottom line is that you cannot stay upright when you are being pulled in opposite directions. [Read more…]

June 21: Stick to God’s Plan

Focal Passage: Joshua 6:1-5, 12-16, 20

Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” It is a reminder that our own wisdom is limited and flawed. God, when He works, tends to do things in a way that brings glory to Himself. The battle plan God reveals to His people for the conquest of Jericho is unconventional to say the least. God’s plan builds trust in Him. Those who obey will see Him work in unexpected ways for His glory!

God was already at work, v. 1. God’s reputation and power through His people preceded their arrival in the land. Apparently, Jericho had heard about God’s work and because of fear the city was “tightly shut.” When you are living in opposition to God, and understand His power, fear is an appropriate response. Many in our world would rather attempt to shut God out instead of invite Him in. Once again, God was at work long before His servants arrived. [Read more…]

Focal Passage: I John 1:5-2:6

Jesus said in John 8:32, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” John shines the light of truth on the darkness of three lies in this passage. The three lies are the lies of fellowship, sin, and obedience. John will make the contrast between truths and lies as great as the contrast between light and darkness. John had shared his desire for them to have fellowship with God; he did not want these lies to interrupt their fellowship. [Read more…]

June 14: Be Confident in God’s Power

Focal Passage: Joshua 3:7-17

There is an old gospel song titled, “I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone.” It is a song about entering Glory at life’s end, but its premise is true for Joshua. He was able to enter into the Promised Land, not under his own power, but by the power of God who exalted, empowered, and enabled him.

In those cases when God leads us to do the impossible, He will also empower and enable us as He is exalted through our obedience. [Read more…]

June 7: The Truth Presented

June 2, 2015

Focal Passage: I John 1:1-4

When we claim to know someone famous, people will often ask us how? Or where is your proof? What do we do? We tell them personal stories about the person. We show them photos of the person and how we met them. These things give credibility to our claim that we really know this person. John gave proof of how he knew Jesus and what great joy was derived from that genuine relationship. John longed for his readers to experience this same fellowship. Unfortunately, some of them were being swayed by various teachings that discredited the Incarnation of Christ. John knew this was essential to genuine fellowship with God and other believers.

The word “beginning” would alert readers that John was talking about Jesus Christ. It also demonstrated His deity by illustrating the fact that He existed before creation. John draws upon various learning styles to highlight Jesus’ humanity. He demonstrates the audible learning style by telling them he has (heard) the teachings of Jesus. He describes the visual learning style by relating all the things he had (seen) Jesus do. He (saw) Jesus perform many different miracles. He was present (observe) at the Transfiguration of Christ. He utilizes the hands-on learning style by saying that he had worked hand-in-hand (touched) with Jesus in His earthly ministry. John wraps this verse up by reinforcing to his readers that he was talking about Jesus Christ by calling Him the Word of Life. This is the title John used for Jesus in his gospel. [Read more…]
