OCT. 5: LACK OF TRUST

September 29, 2025

By Josh Sinquefield
Pastor • First Baptist Church • Milan

Focal Passage: Numbers 20:2-13

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleAs a dad of three growing boys, I can say one thing with certainty: They can eat. Our refrigerator is rarely safe. Yet sometimes I’ll find one of them standing with the fridge door wide open, frustrated because “there’s nothing to eat.” Of course, there’s food — it just may not be what they want in that moment. Their mom and I will never let them go without. But their frustration blinds them to what’s already been provided.

That’s the spirit we see in Numbers 20. God had proven His faithfulness to Israel again and again, yet the people chose to complain. The passage reveals a progression of distrust that we, too, often fall into. [Read more…]

OCT. 5: THE GREATEST COMMAND

September 29, 2025

By Kevin Shrum

Focal Passage: Mark 12:28-34

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeThe date of Sept. 10, 2025, will go down as a watershed moment in American history. A 22-year-old radicalized sniper assassinated Christian and political activist Charlie Kirk. The shooter was ideologically driven by a mixture of transgenderism, radical leftism, mixed with the ingredients of dark portions of the internet that prey on the sinful and confused, especially young men.

It was pure evil. Raised by Mormons, the assassin repudiated his moral upbringing and chose instead a life that ended in his spiritual death and the physical death of Kirk. Proverbs 8:35-36 come to mind: “For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”  What does all of this have to do with the text before us? SEPT. 28: REBELLION AND JUDGMENT

September 22, 2025

By Josh Sinquefield

Focal Passage: Numbers 11:4-17

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleOne of the most fascinating careers to study is that of Hotshot Crews — elite firefighters trained to face the most dangerous wildfires. One of their primary tools is the “firebreak,” a strip of cleared land that stops flames from spreading and creates a safe zone.

In Numbers 14, Moses functions as a spiritual firebreak. He stands between God’s judgment and the people’s rebellion, interceding on their behalf.

By this point, Israel had rebelled repeatedly. Despite seeing God’s power in undeniable ways, they persisted in unbelief (vv. 11-12). God asked, “How long will they despise me? How long will they not trust me?” At its core, sin is rebellion — not just against God’s commands, but against His character. Outwardly, Israel may have followed at times, but inwardly their hearts were far from Him. Rebellion always begins in the heart, and rebellion against a holy God demands justice. His anger was justified, and His judgment was deserved. [Read more…]

SEPT. 28: THE GREATEST GIFT

September 22, 2025

By Kevin Shrum

Focal Passage: Romans 5:6-11; 18-21

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeMost people love receiving gifts, especially if those gifts are personal and reflect a degree of forethought. But what is the greatest gift, the best gift? The greatest gift of all time – the G.O.A.T. Gift — is the salvation we have in and through the Lord Jesus Christ. Why is this the greatest gift? The text before us tells us several reasons why the gospel of the best gift.

But let’s be technical and detailed about the inner workings of this great gift. Romans 5 is clear about the nature of God’s great gift of salvation in Jesus Christ. Let us outline the parts of this gift.  [Read more…]

SEPT. 21: THE LAND

September 15, 2025

By Josh Sinquefield
Pastor • First Baptist Church, Milan

Focal Passage: Numbers 13:17-31

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleRecently, my wife and I were talking about skydiving. A couple we knew had gone, so I asked her if she’d ever want to try it. Without hesitation, she said, “Yes, absolutely!”

I, on the other hand, began listing all the risks — chief among them, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. My hesitations came from fear, while hers came from anticipation of the thrill. We looked at the same event and saw two very different perspectives. That’s exactly what happens in Numbers 13. The Israelites were given a chance to look at the promised land, and their perspectives revealed whether they would trust God or fear the obstacles before them.

Moses sent twelve spies to scout the land God had promised. He gave them an opportunity to trust (vv. 17-20, 27). This was never about whether the land was good — it was about seeing God’s gift with their own eyes. They had already witnessed His miraculous power: the Red Sea parting, manna from heaven, water from the rock. God had proved Himself faithful. This mission was an opportunity to trust Him again and to celebrate the goodness of the land He was giving. But instead of rejoicing in the gift, most of them focused elsewhere. [Read more…]

SEPT. 21: THE GREATEST SIN

September 15, 2025

By Kevin Shrum
Pastor • Inglewood Baptist Church • Nashville

Focal Passage: Matthew 12:22-32

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeWhat is the greatest sin? Put another way, what is the unpardonable sin? Or what is the ONE SIN God will not forgive? Divorce? Adultery? Abuse? Drug use? Anger? Laziness? Gluttony? This is a serious issue. The eternal destiny of a person is in the balance if we get this issue wrong.

The text before us tells us what that ONE SIN is. Matthew 12:31 states: “Therefore, I tell you, people will be forgiven every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, neither in this age or in the one to come.”

Wow! This is a sobering text. Jesus’ argument with the Pharisees ends with Him uttering these chilling words of warning. Any person, great or small, rich or poor, elite or common, who rejects the work of the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven and will continue under the wrath and judgment of God, until the final judgment of hell and damnation will be visited on all who reject the Lord Jesus.  [Read more…]

SEPT. 14: PROVISION

September 8, 2025

By Josh Sinquefield

Focal Passage: Numbers 11:4-17

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleRecently, I traveled on a mission trip to Ecuador. In one village, the people graciously prepared lunch for our team—a local delicacy I hadn’t encountered before: guinea pig. To me, guinea pig is a pet, not a meal, but we felt compelled to partake.

I managed to get it down (barely) while longing for the familiar food back at the hotel. It wasn’t what I wanted, but it was what I had. I should have been grateful, yet I found myself frustrated. [Read more…]

SEPT. 14: THE GREATEST NEED

September 8, 2025

By Kevin Shrum
Pastor • Inglewood Baptist Church • Nashville

Focal Passage: Luke 5:17-26

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeWhat is our greatest need of all time? Some believe our greatest need is financial. To have the resources to live a comfortable life is the zenith of this idea. Others believe our greatest need is emotional. To have our emotional self affirmed is seen as most important from this standpoint.

Still others believe our greatest need is relational. That is to have family and friends who care for us appears to be most important from this vantage point. Finally, some believe our psychological wellbeing is most important so that we might overcome seasons of doubt, discourage, disappointment, and depression.  [Read more…]

SEPT. 7: THE JOURNEY

September 1, 2025

By Josh Sinquefield

Focal Passage: Numbers 9:15-23

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleWhen I was a little boy in sunny Orlando, my dad often took my older brother and me on bike rides around our neighborhood. We rarely took the same route twice. At the start of each ride, Dad gave us our “jobs.”

My brother’s task was to ride in the back and “watch out for alligators or bad guys coming from behind” — a role that sounded heroic to my six-year-old ears.  [Read more…]

SEPT. 7: THE GREATEST NAME

September 1, 2025

By Kevin Shrum
Pastor • Inglewood Baptist Church • Nashville

Focal Passage: Isaiah 42:1-12

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeThe word G.O.A.T. is often used as an acronym for Greatest Of All Time.

The next several weeks we will be looking at Scriptural G.O.A.T.s.: the Greatest Name, Need, Sin, Gift, Command, and Return. We begin this week with the Greatest Name – the name of the One, true, triune, and living God, at Father, Son, and Spirit. To be a G.O.A.T. means that no one is better, no one is greater, no one is above the one considered the greatest. [Read more…]
