MAR. 6: OUR NEED FOR CONTENTMENT

February 29, 2016

By Gene Price
Pastor, Tumbling Creek Baptist Church, Gleason

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: John 6:26-27, 35-40

Today people want more. Think of all the luxuries we have today that we did not have 50 years ago. We have cell phones for instant communication. We have bigger televisions with more than 500 channels. The problem with society is many are convinced that more is always better. The more prosperous we are, or the more money we have, the more satisfied we think we will be. However, Jesus never promised prosperity. [Read more…]

FEB. 28: ACCESS GRANTED

February 22, 2016

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: Matthew 13:1-13 (NKJV)

Jesus used parables as a medium for His teaching ministry. Parables are stories that depict real life, with a spiritual meaning attached. They were designed to provoke thought, calling for action on the part of the hearer.

Parables have always been a strength to me over the years including this one. Since Israel was primarily an agricultural country Jesus focused many of His parables around that theme. To discuss the four types of soil and how they receive seeds sown upon them was something the people within His hearing could understand, maybe. It is interesting that His disciples consistently had difficulty grasping the true meaning of His parables. [Read more…]

FEB. 28: DISTINCT IN MY LOVE

February 22, 2016

By Michael Crandall
Senior Pastor, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Dyersburg

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Matthew 5:43-48

How can a person walk through life and learn how and why we love things, places, and people? When we think about what love is, we understand that love is not just something we say or a surface feeling. When we realize what the Bible tells us that is and how and why we must love, we can then grasp a better understanding!

When I was a young boy I “loved” playing out on that little farm I grew up on! I “loved” when we had homemade ice cream! I “loved” riding the tractor with my grandfather! The question now becomes why did I love those times? Why would I love to play, eat, and have fun? When we look at the Scripture for this week we see what Jesus said love is and how we should apply that love to our lives! [Read more…]

FEB. 21: WHAT’S THE SIGN?

February 15, 2016

By Ray Luck
Pastor, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Athens

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: Matthew 12:38-42, NKJV

Lucy, Linus, and Charlie Brown were lying on a hill looking at the clouds. Lucy asked Linus what he saw in the clouds to which he replied, “I see what looks like Honduras and that one is the profile of a famous painter and sculptor and that group makes me think of the stoning of Stephen with the Apostle Paul standing nearby.” Lucy then asks Charlie Brown who replied, “Well I was going to say I saw a ducky and horsie, but I changed my mind.”

When I was young, and even now, I like to look at cloud formations to see if they remind me of anything. Some people look at clouds or other things and try to glean a message or a sign from the Almighty. [Read more…]

FEB. 21: DISTINCT IN MY REACTIONS

February 15, 2016

By Michael Crandall
Senior Pastor, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Dyersburg

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Matthew 5:33-42

It is often said that how we react to life is one of the most important things in life! When a follower of Christ walks through a situation the world around us often watches us go through whatever is happening. When they are watching us they may or may not remember all the details but one thing is often remembered and that is our reaction. [Read more…]

FEB. 14: AN OPEN INVITATION

February 8, 2016

By Ray Luck
Pastor, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Athens

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: Matthew 11:20-30, NKJV

During the course of our lives we will receive several invitations to do a variety of things. Sometimes the invitation is very specific, other times it is open ended. When an invitation is given the one issuing the invitation usually, if not every time, will expect a response as to whether the invitee will or will not accept (RSVP).

During Jesus’ earthly walk He issued several invitations such as, “Come to Me” or “Abide with Me” or “Follow Me.” Many, over the years have responded positively to His invitations resulting in a changed life, a growing faith walk, and the promised eternal life with Him. However, there are many who refuse what Jesus offers as did those in John 6:66 — “From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked with Him no more.” [Read more…]

FEB. 14: DISTINCT IN MY RELATIONSHIPS

February 8, 2016

By Michael Crandall
Senior Pastor, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Dyersburg

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Matthew 5:27-32

What does being distinct in our relationships look like? We are now living in a world where the relationships of believers have very little differences from the relationships of non-believers. There was once a time when our churches and our families taught us that we have a biblical mandate to live a different life from that of non-believers. We have let the world creep into all walks of our lives and now you have to look really hard to find the differences between each other. [Read more…]

FEB. 7: IN HIS SERVICE

February 1, 2016

By Ray Luck
Pastor, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Athens

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: Matthew 9:35-38; 10:1-8 (NKJV)

I think all of us at some point in time have a desire to be like someone else. If you are a Peanuts cartoon junky like I am you no doubt have noticed how many characters Snoopy thinks he is — a famous fighter pilot in World War I, or a famous attorney, or an ice skating coach, etc. The one thing he rarely wants to be is himself. As we think of this in the spiritual realm it should ever be our desire to “Be Like Jesus” in service. In order to be like Jesus we must study His life and incorporate into our life those things worthy of emulation. R. G. Lee, the late great pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis said, “What Southern Baptists need more than anything is to be like Jesus.” That statement still rings true today, but the issue we all face is how we use the time we have to make that a reality. The passage in Matthew teaches us four things about Jesus that if appropriated into our life would help us to draw closer to Jesus and thus become more like Him in service. [Read more…]

FEB. 7: DISTINCT IN MY APPROACH TO CONFLICT

February 1, 2016

By Michael Crandall
Senior Pastor, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Dyersburg

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Matthew 5:21-26

Conflict is a word that most of us do not like hearing, but for some they enjoy being in the middle of it. Conflict is something that keeps me up at night. I do not like having it anywhere around me! As a believer in Christ there are people all around us watching to see how we deal with conflict. There are times when we can avoid it at all cost, but there are also times where we must face it head on and see what we can do to help fix the issues. [Read more…]

JAN. 31: FAITH DEMONSTRATED

January 25, 2016

By Ray Luck
Pastor, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Athens

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: Matthew 8:5-13, NKJV

One of my all time favorite cartoon strips is “Peanuts” by the late Charles Schulz. The other day I ran across one that I felt fit this lesson. Linus had built a small army of snowmen and he walked in front of them and said, “I am your leader, if you will follow me, you will be invincible! There is nothing that can stop us! Nothing!” In the last frame, the sun melts his army. [Read more…]
