Focal Passage: Matthew 3:13-4:11

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleBefore Jesus ever preached a sermon, healed a disease, or called a disciple, the Father affirmed who He was. Matthew shows us that salvation doesn’t begin with human effort, rather it begins with the Son whom the Father sent. In this section of Scripture, we see three powerful affirmations that set the tone for Jesus’ life and mission.

First, we see that the Father affirms Jesus’ identity (3:13-17). Jesus steps into the Jordan not because He needed cleansing from sin, but because He came to identify with sinners. In this humble act, heaven breaks open, the Spirit descends, and the Father declares, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Before Jesus did anything, the Father said, “You are Mine.” That’s a good reminder for us. We live in a world that constantly asks, “What have you achieved?” but God first says, “You are loved.” Imagine a little child learning to ride a bike. The parent doesn’t wait until the child rides perfectly to cheer — they celebrate the wobbling and the attempts. In the same way, the Father’s affirmation is given before Jesus’ ministry even begins. Your worth is not anchored in your performance but in your position. You are a son or a daughter of the King. When you remember who you are, it shapes how you live.

Secondly, the Spirit affirms Jesus’ obedience (4:1-2). Right after the mountaintop moment at the Jordan, the Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness. Not every wilderness season means you did something wrong, sometimes it means God is preparing you for something to come.

The wilderness affirms Jesus’ obedience. He goes because the Spirit leads. He fasts because the mission requires it. He submits because redemption demands it. We often want the dove without the desert. But Scripture reminds us that both are part of God’s shaping work. Think of a blacksmith strengthening steel: the fire isn’t a sign of discouragement but of development. When God leads you into difficulty, you can still trust His hand. Obedience isn’t tested when life is easy, it’s proven when life is hard.

Finally, the Word affirms Jesus’ authority (4:3-11). In the wilderness, Satan attacks the very thing the Father affirmed, Jesus’ identity: “If you are the Son of God…” Temptation always tries to make us doubt what God has already declared. But Jesus stands firm. He does not argue, outperform, or negotiate. He simply answers with the Word of God. Three temptations are met with three Scriptures. Where Adam fell and Israel failed, Jesus faithfully stands.

When you shine a flashlight in a dark room, the darkness doesn’t argue, it leaves. When Jesus shines the truth, the tempter departs. When you feel spiritually attacked or internally shaken, cling to Scripture. God’s Word doesn’t just inform you; it equips you. In order to know God’s Word we should dedicate ourselves to the teaching of God’s Word, commit ourselves to the study of God’s Word, and devote ourselves to the memorization of God’s Word.

These three scenes at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry whisper a needed truth to all of us: you are loved by the Father, you are led by the Spirit, and you are strengthened by the Word. And because Jesus stood firm, we can stand forgiven. B&R
