Focal Passage: Colossians 1:15-22
What’s at the center of your life? What do you desire above all else?
In these passages, the apostle Paul presents one of the clearest and most powerful declarations of who Jesus Christ is and why He must be the center of everything.
Paul writes this letter to the church in Colossae to combat the growing influence of false teaching in the church. These teachings placed salvation in our effort rather than in Jesus alone. Paul responds by exalting Christ as supreme.
Paul declares that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Though God cannot be seen, He is fully revealed through Christ. Jesus is not merely a representation of God; He is God in the flesh.
Just as a picture of a luxury car cannot compare to the real thing, Jesus is not a copy of God — He is the exact expression of God’s nature. Paul calls Jesus the “firstborn over all creation,” not meaning that He was created, but that He holds the highest rank and authority. Christ existed before creation and stands above it.
Paul emphasizes that Jesus is the center of all creation. Everything was created by Him, through Him, and for Him. Jesus is the planner, the power, and the purpose behind all that exists. Nothing — visible or invisible — is outside His authority. Not only did He create all things, but He also sustains them, holding everything together and preventing creation from descending into chaos. When Christ is removed from the center, life loses its order, purpose, and stability.
Next, Paul teaches that Jesus is the center of the church. Christ is the head of the body, meaning He is the source and authority of the church. The church does not exist for its own survival or comfort, but to fulfill the mission of Christ.
The church is a living organism led by Jesus Himself. False teachers claimed Jesus was only one step on the path to God, but Paul insists that Christ is preeminent — the highest in rank, power, and importance. He alone is the way, and believers are called not merely to attend church, but to serve, grow, and participate in God’s mission.
Finally, Paul explains that Jesus is the center of redemption.
The fullness of God dwelled in Christ so that humanity could be reconciled to God. Because of sin, people were enemies of God, unable and unwilling to restore the relationship on their own. God took the initiative through the physical death of Jesus on the cross.
Through His blood, peace was made, sins were forgiven, and believers are now presented holy and blameless before God. This real, bodily sacrifice refutes the false claim that Jesus was not fully human.
Paul’s ultimate message is simple yet profound: the true gospel is Jesus alone. Salvation is not Jesus plus rules, effort, or religious systems. Christ is sufficient. The question remains for every believer — is Jesus truly the center of your life? Only the gospel makes that possible. B&R
