BRENTWOOD – Retired Tennessee Baptist Convention staff member and long-time disaster relief volunteer Mike Overcash died June 8 following an apparent heart attack.

Overcash, 80, a former employee of LifeWay Christian Resources who served several Tennessee Baptist churches as minister of music, was on the staff of the TBC from 1995-2001 as computer services specialist and as interim director of Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief in 2015.

After retirement Overcash remained active in Tennessee Baptist life as a disaster relief volunteer through Judson Baptist Church, Nashville, where he was a member. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., Overcash escalated his involvement and became a fulltime DR volunteer, helping in the wake of that incident as well as multiple hurricanes and tornados that wreaked havoc across the southeastern United States.

He served as an emergency services coordinator with TEMA (Tennessee Emergency Management Agency) and was a liaison with Tennessee VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters). He also served as a trainer for various disaster relief certifications through TBC Disaster Relief.

In January 2015 Overcash was named interim director of Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief following the retirement of David Acres. He served in that role for one year before Wes Jones was selected as DR director late last summer.

“Mike served Tennessee Baptists and the Lord with faithfulness and giftedness,” said Randy C. Davis, TBC executive director/treasurer. “Mike had the love and respect of people from all across the state,” Davis observed.

Overcash is survived by his wife Jean and two adult children, Michael Overcash and Kim Stanford, both of the Nashville area.
