Focal Passage: Deuteronomy 30:11-20

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleThere are often times in my life (too many to count) when I can’t find something in the refrigerator. I’ll get frustrated, tell my wife we’re out, and start adding it to the grocery list — only for her to walk over, open the door, and grab the item that was sitting right there in plain sight. Any other guys with me? My mom used to say, “If it were a snake, it would’ve bitten you.” In our passage this week, Moses says something similar.

When Moses stood before the people of Israel for the final time, he didn’t deliver new commands or reveal a hidden secret. He reminded them of something simple but essential: God’s way isn’t mysterious—it’s right in front of them. The question wasn’t whether they could understand it, but whether they would choose to live by it. The same is true for us. God calls His people to be fully committed.

The first principle we notice of commitment is that the Word is near (vv. 11-14). We often act like following God is a puzzle to solve, but it’s really a promise to trust. God hasn’t hidden His will from us. His truth is accessible, understandable, and applicable right where we are. Being fully committed starts by realizing that we already know what to do, the question is whether we’ll do it. God’s Word isn’t distant; it’s dwelling in us, ready to guide us if we’ll listen.

The next principle of commitment that God’s Word teaches is that the choice is ours (vv. 15-18). Moses lays before the people a clear contrast: “life and prosperity” or “death and adversity.” Those are strong words meant to awaken the heart. Every day, we stand at the crossroads of obedience and disobedience. To love and follow God leads to life. To turn away leads to ruin.

God has given us the gift of choice, but He will not force our devotion. Being fully committed means we stop treating faith like a half-hearted agreement and start living as if eternity depends on it, because it does. Our spiritual life is a daily decision. Each choice reveals what we value most. Joshua echoed this in Joshua 24:15 and Jesus gave the same challenge in Luke 9:23.

Moses ends this challenge with a reminder to the Israelites and to us that the consequences of following God are clear (vv. 19-20). His tone becomes deeply personal: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life.” It’s a plea from a loving shepherd who wants his people to experience God’s best. The reward of full commitment isn’t just avoiding curses, it’s discovering the fullness of life that comes from loving God, listening to His voice, and holding fast to Him.

When we cling to the Lord, we find that He isn’t just the giver of life…He is our life. Commitment to God isn’t about cold duty; it’s about deep devotion. It’s saying, “Lord, I choose You again today.” What would it look like for you to “choose life” today? Maybe it’s returning to Scripture, forgiving someone, or surrendering an area you’ve been holding back. God’s call remains the same: “Love the Lord your God… for He is your life.” B&R
