Focal Passage: Deuteronomy 33:1-5, 26-29
As Moses prepared to leave this world, he didn’t gather Israel to draw attention to himself. He gathered them to lift their eyes to the greatness of their God. After a lifetime of leading, interceding, teaching, and shepherding, Moses wanted Israel to know one truth above all: God is enough. His presence is enough. His power is enough. His protection is enough. And because He is enough, His people can live without fear.
Deuteronomy 33 is Moses’ final blessing over Israel. It is filled with warmth, hope, and confidence — not because Israel was perfect, but because their God was faithful. These verses remind us that the same God who sustained Israel is the God who sustains us today.
A truth about God’s power that we are reminded of here is that God leads us by His presence (vv. 1-5). Moses begins by reminding Israel where their journey began: with God Himself. “The Lord came from Sinai… He shone forth.” God is not distant. He is not detached. From the very beginning, He moved toward His people. He came not only with majesty, but with His law, His good and life-giving instruction.
Moses wanted Israel to know that everything they had experienced, every step, every miracle, and every victory, was possible only because God went before them. The same is true for us. Before we face a single day, God is already ahead of us. Before we make a single decision, His wisdom is already available to us. His presence leads, guides, and steadies His people. When you feel unsure of the path in front of you, remember this: God goes before you with truth and grace.
A second truth of God’s power Moses reminds us of is that God carries us by His strength (vv. 26-27). “There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to your aid.” What a picture this is. God is not limited or restrained. He is our heavenly Warrior, our ever-present Helper, our unshakable strength.
And then Moses adds one of the most comforting lines in the entire book: “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” When life feels uncertain … His arms hold us. When fear rises … His arms steady us. When we fall … His arms catch us. When the weight feels too heavy … His arms carry us. No believer walks through life propped up by their own ability. We are carried by the strength of a God who does not grow tired, who does not give up, and who never lets go.
The final truth we are reminded of is that God protects us by His sovereignty (28-29). Moses ends with confidence: God’s people “dwell securely.” Why? Because their God is their shield, their defender, and their salvation. Israel’s security wasn’t in their numbers, their military, or their circumstances. It was in God alone.
And so is ours. We live without fear not because life is easy, but because God is present. We face tomorrow not because we are strong, but because God is sovereign. We trust the future not because we know what will happen, but because we know who holds it. B&R
