PASTOR: ‘THEY JUST NEEDED A HUG’

MOUNTAIN CITY — Long before disaster relief volunteers could even get into Mountain City, pastor David Hankal and members of Roan Creek Baptist Church were out in the community checking on neighbors and fellow church members.

“We took meals provided by the Salvation Army to people who could not get out and did welfare checks, among a variety of things” said Roan Creek pastor David Hankal.

“Our church people are phenomenal,” Hankal said. “They see a need and start ministering,” he said.

God used the members of Roan Creek, from young children to teenagers and senior adults, in a bad situation for His good, Hankal observed.

As he visited families, often accompanied by his 6-year-old granddaughter Kaylee. Hankal was somewhat surprised by what they asked for. “They just needed a hug.”

His granddaughter and other church members gave away plenty of hugs following Hurricane Helene, the pastor affirmed. “It brightened their day.” B&R
