PASTOR, WHO WAS THE FIRST ‘MR. BELMONT,’ DIES AT 97

HENDERSONVILLE — Longtime Tennessee Baptist pastor Hiram LeMay died Feb. 1 at the age of 97 in Hendersonville.

LeMay served as pastor of churches in the state for more than 60 years. Pastorates included Concord Baptist Church, Nashville; Una Baptist Church, Nashville; Shelbyville Mills Baptist Church, Shelbyville; Rugby Hills Baptist Church, Memphis and Grace Baptist Church, Nashville. He also held many revivals in Tennessee and other states and served on numerous associational and state convention committees.

LeMay had the distinction of being the first “Mr. Belmont” at Belmont College (now University) in 1951. The award also was referred to as the “Bachelor of Ugliness.”

He is survived by five children, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. B&R
