FRANKLIN — A scholarship fund for children to attend the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board’s Journey Camp has been established by the family of Linda Chinery.
Linda Chinery, who died Nov. 5 in Stuart, Fla., served as part-time Journey Camp director from 2006-2016. “She was very active in children’s ministry and Vacation Bible School across the state,” said Tim Bearden, retired director of the Tennessee Baptist Conference Centers.
In addition to Journey Camp, she was a consultant for the TBMB in Sunday School, VBS and Bible Field Fun Day and helped train summer missionaries through Baptist Collegiate Ministries. She also served on the training team for travel teams that led camps and assisted churches in VBS during the summer.
Vicki Hulsey, childhood ministry specialist for the TBMB, first met Chinery, who served as children’s minister at Ridgeview Baptist Church, Church Hill, for 25 years, in 1996 and developed a friendship that grew over the years.
“When I talked with her in 2006 about the possibility of serving as Journey Camp director, I’ve never seen anyone with a love for children and children’s leaders as great as Linda’s.
“We can never imagine the number of children that have a personal relationship with Jesus that can be traced back to Linda’s personal investment in the life of that child or the parents and leaders that she had a part in training to share Jesus with children,” Hulsey added.
Paul Chinery, Linda’s husband of 53 years, said he wanted to honor his wife in a special way. “She touched the life of every person she met,” he said.
He noted that she loved ministering to and working with children, especially during her years at Journey Camp.
“I don’t want any child to have to miss going to Journey Camp because of a lack of funds,” he said.
