LINDEN — Longtime Tennessee Baptist Mission Board staff member Tim Bearden has had a love for Christian camps since his early childhood in Georgia, growing up in a preacher’s home.

“There never was a time in my life that I did not know the love of God because of loving parents,” recalled Bearden, who is retiring Dec. 31 after nearly 40 years in denominational ministry.

Bearden has held several roles since joining the TBMB staff in 1995. Most recently he has served as senior manager of the two Tennessee Baptist Conference Centers — Linden Valley in Linden and Carson Springs in Newport. [Read more…]

CARSON SPRINGS EVENT SETS TONE FOR CHRISTMAS SEASON

December 5, 2018

By Carla Harper
Contributing Writer, B&R

Emily Terrell of First Baptist Church, Dandridge, recently encouraged participants at the annual Christmas in November Women’s Luncheon, sponsored by Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center in Newport.

NEWPORT  — “All is Calm. All is Bright” was the theme for the annual Christmas in November Women’s Luncheon held Nov. 10 at Carson Springs Baptist Conference Center in Newport.

Kevin Perrigan, manager of Carson Springs, and his wife, Debra, have sponsored the event since they first came to Carson Springs 11 years ago.

“We continue this tradition each year because it continues to have an impact. We continue to see results. Women come back and bring friends with them each year. Women tell us they have a good time; and more importantly, they have told us that it helps them get their mind set on Christ before the holidays get them too busy to get distracted from what Christmas is really about,” Perrigan said. FRANKLIN — For Pete Tackett, the importance of taking a day off is as clear as the stubble on his face.

Tackett, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Johnson City, admits that he often finds himself caught up in the treadmill-style work patterns that so many pastors and staff members encounter. But he said one of the keys to escaping the cycle is to set boundaries — and stick to them.

“My definition of a true Sabbath is a day when I get to decide whether I have to shave or not,” said Tackett. “That might seem like a funny thing to say, but in the church world, when you are always on the clock, it’s necessary to have a day where you say, ‘I’m going to be free to decide what I want to do.’ ” [Read more…]

THE GIFT OF CAMP (AND PRAYER)

May 15, 2018

By Randy C. Davis
TBMB President & Executive Director

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child or teenager is the opportunity to attend church camp.

It was a gift for me and it had a significant place in my spiritual growth. I was a new believer as a teenager when I attended Citronelle Baptist Assembly (CBA) about 60 miles inland from the Alabama Gulf Coast. That opportunity to get away from the distractions of life allowed me to hear from the Lord in ways that have profoundly impacted the course of my life. My brother, Rob, is a pastor and also had his life and calling shaped at CBA where he served as a counselor for several years. [Read more…]

FRANKLIN — Tim Bearden said last year was a good start.

Now, he is hoping for even greater participation — and more impactful results — during the second annual Day of Prayer for the Tennessee Baptist Conference Centers.

Bearden, the TBMB’s conference centers senior manager, is encouraging churches across Tennessee to “pray with expectation” for the two conference centers — located in Carson Springs and Linden Valley — when the second installment of the Day of Prayer is held on Sunday, May 20.  [Read more…]

With him are current chair Mike Sams, right, pastor of First Baptist Church, Martin, and Cal Hampton, senior associate pastor of preaching and evangelism at First Baptist Church, Clarksville, who will serve as chair in 2018 following The Summit in Hendersonville.

FRANKLIN — The board of directors of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board have approved expanding the definition of a cooperating Baptist church to include those churches that give through the Tennessee Baptist Convention portion of the Cooperative Program budget without restriction or designation.

CAMP PREPARES STUDENTS TO IMPACT THEIR WORLD

Mikey Waddey

LINDEN — Maury City First Baptist Church returned to IMPACT camp for the second consecutive year after an overwhelming affirmation from the kids.

“We come back because this particular camp does a really good job of recognizing that camp is not for camp’s sake,” said Mikey Waddey, pastor of Maury City First Baptist Church. “We do camp for the sake of sending these kids home with a real sense of who Jesus is in their life and what He wants them to be in their own community.” [Read more…]

IMPACT CAMP DOESN’T JUST AFFECT THE YOUTH

August 11, 2017

By Courtney Swaw
Summer Intern, Linden Valley

Bryan and Jessy Bratcher

LINDEN — As Bryan Bratcher was attending his first IMPACT camp three years ago, he wondered, “What if there was a church in our community that was committed to biblical truth that had this kind of culture?”

In 2014 Bratcher attended IMPACT camp (his first ever youth camp) at Linden Valley as the youth pastor of Stones River Baptist Church, Smyrna. He was 31 years old at the time.

“I’d never been to a youth camp before in my entire life. I didn’t even know what youth camp looked like. I would have been the kid they would have thrown out of youth camp if I would have come,” recalled Bratcher, now pastor of Christ Community Church in Smyrna. [Read more…]
