SBC LEADERS COMMEND CDC GUIDELINES TO CHURCHES

May 27, 2020

By Tom Strode
Baptist Press

WASHINGTON — Southern Baptist leaders commended to churches the new federal guidelines for restoring in-person worship gatherings during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, even as efforts to resolve conflicts between state governments and faith communities continue.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued interim guidelines May 22 that reminded state and local officials to take the First Amendment right of religious liberty into account when they institute reopening policies. No church or other religious group should be called on to enact “mitigation strategies” stricter than those requested of “similarly situated entities or activities,” the CDC said.

Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), said the guidance “seems reasonable and helpful.” [Read more…]

TRUMP CALLS CHURCHES ‘ESSENTIAL’ AS BAPTIST LEADERS URGE EQUAL TREATMENT IN REOPENING

May 26, 2020

By Tom Strode
Baptist Press

President Trump Friday identified houses of worship as “essential places that provide essential services,” according to The Associated Press. — Screen capture from Fox News

WASHINGTON — Southern Baptist leaders are urging government officials to treat churches and other religious groups more justly in their reopening policies regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The calls for change came after churches in Minnesota and California told their governors they would begin holding in-person services in defiance of policies they consider to be unequal in treatment. Guidelines issued by Govs. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Gavin Newsom of California are less restrictive on retail businesses than they are on religious groups. [Read more…]

PASTORAL MINISTRY AND MENTAL HEALTH

May 21, 2020

By Cody Glen Barnhart
Director of music and media, First Baptist Church, Alcoa

Recently, Seacoast Church announced that former Southern Baptist pastor Darrin Patrick passed away from what “appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” The news sent shockwaves through social media. Patrick’s passing is a devastating blow. We seem to have lost another one of our brothers to the crisis of mental health.

Patrick’s death serves as a somber reminder that the effects of the coronavirus outbreak are not only physical: isolation feels ever-present.

Because 2020 has gone awry, an entire generation of pastors feel (perhaps for the first time) the need for pointed, calculated and faithful leadership. Pastors have a lot of stress right now. And in the midst of this, they can’t even hug one another as a reminder of the brotherhood they share in Christ. [Read more…]

TBMB CONFERENCE CENTERS PLAN ‘SOFT REOPENING’

May 21, 2020

Baptist and Reflector

FRANKLIN — As COVID-19 began to spread in March, the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board officially closed its two conference centers — Carson Springs in Newport and Linden Valley in Linden — on March18.

Mark Proctor, associate administrator of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board, called the action a “hard close” because “everything was taken off the books at that point.”

Beginning June 23, the hard close ends and a “soft reopening” begins as the conference center reopens “to host select smaller groups, individuals and events that can be managed while meeting state and federal gathering guidelines.,” Proctor said. [Read more…]

ARE YOU PROTECTING THE PRIVACY OF YOUR VIRTUAL MEETINGS?

May 21, 2020

By Chris Turner
cturner@tnbaptist.org

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has forced a significant amount of life change and possibly no part of our lives have changed more than the way we “do business.”

Globally, organizations have shifted in-person meetings to virtual meetings. Churches are certainly included with worship services, staff meetings and small group meetings all adapting to some form of “video conferencing.” The use of technology has been a useful tool to stay connected and keep the ministries of a church moving forward.

However, it has also been an open door for hackers and those with nefarious intentions to invade, disrupt and harm those they target.

There is a wide variety of virtual apps used to visually connect, like iPhone’s Facetime, Microsoft Teams and WebEx, but the application that has risen in popularity as a world leader in virtual conferencing is Zoom Video Communications, Inc.  [Read more…]

STILL A FUTURE FOR VOCATIONAL EVANGELISTS

Tennessee Baptist evangelists optimistic despite COVID-19 challenges

By Lonnie Wilkey

FRANKLIN — COVID-19 has affected every vocation imaginable, but one group that has flown under the radar is vocational evangelists.

For most vocational evangelists, spring through fall is the busiest times for conducting revivals and other evangelistic events. “Certainly this virus has put a stop to all revivals and other events (special Sundays, conferences, etc.) that involve evangelists,” observed Phil Glisson of Phil Glisson Ministries in Memphis.

“The uncertainty surrounding all of this is making us take it one week at a time. We, like so many, are praying that our church services can soon resume and that pastors will schedule or reschedule us. I am getting calls now for future months,” he said. [Read more…]

REGATHERING WILL BE NEW EXPERIENCE FOR ALL

May 19, 2020

By Bruce Chesser
President, Tennessee Baptist Convention

Most of us are trying to determine the best course of action in reengaging in on campus worship. Notice I did not say “reopening.” We haven’t been closed.  Almost all of us have continued to lead our people in Sunday worship, Wednesday night Bible studies, and we have engaged many of our small groups in some new thing called Zoom. Zoom, zoom, zoom.  We’ve zoomed all over the planet in the last few months.

Here are a few things to remember.

First, no one knows exactly how to handle this. Unless you were alive 100 years ago, none of us have ever been through a pandemic.  Your pastor has not been through it, your director of missions has not been through it, your state executive director has not been through it, and you have not been through it.  No one but the Lord knows what the next few weeks and months are going to hold.

Second, we must have a plan. Leaders lead. We must develop a plan to reengage. For most, it will be done in phases. The reality is that the date might change.  But whatever the date happens to be, there has to be a plan.  [Read more…]

15 IMPORTANT WORSHIP ‘HELPS’ FOR CHURCHES

May 18, 2020

By Scott C. Shepherd
Tennessee Baptist Mission Board music and worship specialist

In the coming weeks and months, churches across Tennessee will make the decision to gather again for worship. These services — though COVID-19 restrictions have been reduced — will not be a return to “worship as usual.”

Here are 15 worship related helps for churches to consider as they prepare to regather.

Maintain social distancing in worship. Restrictions have been lessened, but social distancing must continue.

• Arrange the congregation so families are at least six feet apart from other families. Block off certain pews or remove chairs, and utilize staff, ushers and deacons to direct traffic, but these guides should also maintain social distancing.  [Read more…]
