EQUIPPED AND ENCOURAGED FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE

February 18, 2021

By Charles A. Fowler
President, Carson-Newman University, Jefferson City

During these days of COVID-19, it seems that every task leaders perform takes longer, is more complex, and draws more criticism than appreciation. Consequently, many pastors and leaders of Christian ministries are discouraged, frustrated and even depressed. These are difficult days for all of us. None seem to be immune to the multitude of challenges resulting from this season of pandemic.

Like any other day, it is wise for us to look to Scripture for instruction. Having done this recently, I found my heart encouraged and my resolve for ministry strengthened. Allow me to share some insights related to Joshua 1:1-9.

In verses 1-2, Scripture reminds us that God’s call is for Christian leaders who shepherd God’s people. God’s call is specific, personal, and timely. He clearly ordered Joshua’s steps and established him as the next leader of Israel.

Thankfully, the Scriptures record much of Joshua’s life and leadership prior to his call to lead Israel. When we consider his life, we see several ways that God equipped Joshua for leadership. Here are at least four episodes in Joshua’s life where his leadership lessons were clearly foundational to his success as a future leader. [Read more…]

GRADUATION GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING

June 5, 2019

By Carolyn Tomlin
Contributing writer, B&R

Across our state, high schools and colleges are planning graduation ceremonies. As the band plays “Pomp and Circumstance,” graduates will march down the aisle and take their place in a group of other young people. Those who have been together for years will soon go separate ways.

What present can you bestow that shows how much you care? If you’re a parent, a relative, or simply a friend, there are ways to show your love in intangible ways.  Long after the ribbon and fancy paper are gone, the graduate will cherish these gifts. If you’ve ever played golf you are familiar with a golfer’s best friend: the mulligan. A mulligan is an extra stroke allowed after a poor shot, not counted on the scorecard. Usually all the players have agreed before the round that a mulligan is allowed. No, a mulligan is not professionally acceptable, but it has kept many an amateur from blowing an otherwise decent round with a single wayward shot. How about you? Could you use a life mulligan? I know many people who feel their 2015 ended on a low note and that “failure” is carrying over to start the new year. If that’s you, take a mulligan and start fresh. Here are three key ideas to keep in mind as you “tee it back up” in 2016. [Read more…]

WE MUST COMFORT THE BROKENHEARTED

December 15, 2015

The Christmas season is a paradox. There’s the joy that comes from celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, the excitement of family gatherings and the fun of watching the anticipation of children and grandchildren waiting for the big day of opening presents.

Unfortunately there is the other side of Christmas; the alone side. Hidden behind the smiles and laughter, there are a lot of people struggling with being overwhelmed with life. They are discouraged, desperate and can’t shake the isolation.

They feel alone, and are in good company. [Read more…]
