REACHING GENERATION Z IMPERATIVE: DAVIS

May 17, 2016

By Connie Davis Bushey

160517genzBRENTWOOD — The projected photo in the meeting room was of 10 children though only one was spotlighted. The caption read — “If the trend continues, nine of 10 children born after 9/11 will reach adulthood without knowing Christ.”

“It takes something monumental to reverse a trend. You don’t reverse a trend just by changing your mind,” observed Randy C. Davis.

Even more alarming is that these children born after 9/11 (2001), who are known as Generation Z, make up what is predicted to be the largest generation ever, added Davis. The executive director of the Tennessee Baptist Convention spoke at the “Reaching Gen Z” luncheon held at Grace Community Church here and at six other locations across the state recently. The meetings drew a total of about 525 people. [Read more…]

NEW MARKET — For the 19th year, cars gathered at New Market Baptist Church here to drive through “The Trail to the Empty Tomb.”

This year, about 650 people viewed the presentation on two nights. One night was rained out, but that has only happened one other time over the years, explained J.W. Taylor, pastor. The presentation has been offered in various kinds of weather other than rain, even in snow, but none of the actors have ever been hurt and even gotten sick, reported Becky Finley, director.

Most years about 1,200 people view the Easter presentation. This year about 325 of those who attended the event had never viewed it before.

The Trail to the Empty Tomb includes 11 scenes, beginning with the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem through His ascension into heaven. As cars leave the presentation, they view one final scene not nearly as elaborate as the others. At the exit sits a lawn chair in which lays a person’s clothes. A pair of shoes sit in front of the chair. A sign by the chair reads, “Don’t be left behind,” referring to the rapture. [Read more…]

David Taft, pastor, First Baptist Church, Hermitage, visits with Hailey Mozo, 8, outside of her apartment as he visits residents there.

HERMITAGE — Pastor David Taft sees First Baptist Church here as a “gas station” which serves a few people at a time.

“Our goal is not to get a lot of people in the building, but to get Christ in people. …

“The church cannot be the church if we remove ourselves from the community,” declared Taft.

“If I can’t relate to them, there’s no chance for them to see what Christ is like. … If I don’t know them, then how can I understand them and help them?” he asked.

“What I would say to the church is, ‘Could we just wake up and learn who our neighbor is?’ ”

For First Baptist, Hermitage, its neighbors live in apartment complexes or multi-housing units, explained Taft, the pastor. [Read more…]

FRANKLIN — To reach its neighborhood, which is home to a lot of Hispanics, Walker Memorial Baptist Church here considered starting a Hispanic congregation. Then it learned from the Tennessee Baptist Convention staff of a Baptist Hispanic congregation meeting in its city and God began to work.

What Walker Memorial Baptist and Iglesia Bautista de las Americas (Baptist Church of the Americas) worked out led the Hispanic church to leave a bigger church building where they were meeting to move to Walker Memorial for one reason, the two pastors explained.

Josh Franks, pastor, Walker Memorial, and Nathan Velasquez, pastor, Las Americas, said both congregations will be better able to minister to the Hispanic neighbors of Walker Memorial if they work together.

Simply put, they needed each other. [Read more…]

A QUESTION FOR EVERY SUNDAY SCHOOL LEADER

March 16, 2016

By Mark Miller
Sunday School Specialist, TBC

Mark Miller

Over the last year, I have had the joy of sitting in on over 35 different Sunday School classes or groups. These groups have been from churches that averaged 15 to 1,800. At least three things took place in every one of these classes or groups. People were prayed for. Some type of fellowship took place among the members. And the Bible was taught.

WOW! If that is all Sunday School is, it is worth doing.

But this experience has caused me to ask a question. It has become a question that I ask in almost every conference. It is a question that I often used to start every consultation. And it is a question that I have even asked from the pulpit. Here’s the question:

If all Sunday School does is teach those who show up, pray for those who show up, and fellowship with those who show up, is that enough? [Read more…]

As I began planning for sharing this year’s information on the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering at our church, I recently read the inspiring account of another missionary who God called and used in a unique way. William Borden’s life is a story that should challenge every church and Christian in the areas of missions, leadership, and ministry.

William Whiting Borden was 16 years old in the early 1900s when he graduated high school. He was an heir to the Borden Dairy fortune. Before he started at Yale University, his parents gave him a trip around the world for his graduation present. [Read more…]
