Churches invited to host watch parties for YEC this year

Long Hollow Baptist Church pastor Robby Gallaty tapes a segment for the 2021 Youth Evangelism Conference. Gallaty is the featured speaker for this year’s conference, which will be streamed to churches across the state.

FRANKLIN — For more than two years, Tennessee Baptist Mission Board youth specialist Jay Barbier has been thinking about the possibility of restructuring the annual Youth Evangelism Conference.

The COVID-19 pandemic opened the door for those changes to be made.

The conference, which has been a popular event for more than 50 years, will have a much different look and feel this year. Instead of being hosted at a central location, the conference will be streamed to churches all across Tennessee on the night of March 13.

Churches are invited to hold “YEC watch parties” on their church campus. Churches can register for the event at yectn.org, and can view the stream, for free, through the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board. Churches can also hold breakout sessions on campus. [Read more…]

TIME TO TURN OVER THE HOURGLASS

January 13, 2021

By Jerry Drace
Evangelist/Senior Pastor, Friendship Baptist Church, Friendship

As the last grains of sand ran out of the 2020 hourglass I read once again the speech of Russian dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn given on June 8, 1978, at the Harvard University commencement service. They were profound at the time and prophetic for 2021.

A portion of his speech follows and concludes with my personal comments. His entire speech can be found at: https://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/alexandersolzhenitsynharvard.htm. [Read more…]

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN?

August 6, 2020

By David Dawson

Panelists for a recent TBMB webinar, seen here in a screenshot from the event, (from top left) were Morgan Comer, Alex Lyons, Bill Choate, Matthew Brown, Darrel Girardier and Chris Turner.

FRANKLIN — Brentwood Baptist Church digital strategy director Darrel Girardier admits that he has a love-hate relationship with analytics, especially in relation to online worship and other events that are streamed on social media platforms.

Can analytics be a useful tool? Without a doubt. But can they be deceiving? Absolutely, Girardier said.

The key, he said, is to dig deeper into the numbers and understand what they really mean. Just because a particular worship service or event draws a high number of “views” doesn’t necessarily mean it was a success. The big question needs to be “was the viewer engaged?” [Read more…]

WE ALL NEED A BREAK FROM INFORMATION OVERLOAD

July 8, 2020

By Lonnie Wilkey

lwilkey@tnbaptist.org

Though we are nearing the four-month mark of the pandemic and some churches have begun to meet again, we’re still not back to where we were (before COVID-19).

And what’s more, it may be a while before we get there.

Add to it over the past few months, tornadoes and other storms, racial tension and protests in our nation, a presidential election in November, a Supreme Court decision giving non-discrimination protection to sexual orientation and gender identity and who knows what else, our nation is dealing with a “brain overload.”

That’s why the June 24 issue of the paper advocated that churches give their ministers a break and allow them to regroup before the new church year begins in a few months and possibly a second round of COVID-19. But a break from the insanity of today’s world is good for everyone. [Read more…]

ELMER HAD A BAD AIM ANYWAY

June 10, 2020

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, B&R

For decades, Elmer Fudd terrorized Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny with his rifle.

Daffy and the “wascally wabbit” probably couldn’t care less that Elmer Fudd’s rifle has been taken away. His bullets always missed.

Now, in a new “reboot” of the classic cartoons, Elmer Fudd can be seen wielding a farmer’s scythe. That’s  a recipe for nightmares. [Read more…]

CHURCH SENDS TEAM ON VIRTUAL MISSION TRIP

May 20, 2020

By Shawn Hendricks
Contributing Writer, Baptist and Reflector

HENDERSONVILLE — For members of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, the news that their church led 30 people on a mission trip last week to New York City in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis could have seemed a little shocking.

“That’s right. They traveled right into the hotbed of the COVID-19 virus,” Bruce Raley, executive pastor of the Nashville area church, announced April 23 in his afternoon e-mail. But he quickly clarified by noting, “they did so through our first Virtual Mission Trip.” [Read more…]

CARSON-NEWMAN LIGHTS CAMPUS IN HONOR OF 2020 GRADUATING CLASS

May 19, 2020

Carson-Newman News Office

Carson-Newman University president Charles Fowler, left, records a video message for C-N’s campus community. Video messages are one of the ways the University has stayed connected with students, faculty and staff.

JEFFERSON CITY — Had the spring semester progressed normally, Carson-Newman University’s senior class would have walked the graduation stage on May 1.

Instead, the University offered a commemorative lighting of the campus’ central building, Henderson Humanities Building, in seniors’ honor. A video showcasing the building’s lighting and highlights from the Class of 2020’s junior and senior years featured words of reassurance from Psalm 119:105: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my path.” [Read more…]

TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOR THE DRIVE-IN CHURCH

April 8, 2020

Baptist and Reflector

University Parkway Baptist Church has been hosting ‘drive-in’ church for the past five years. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has generated the need for many other churches in the country to hold similar services.

JOHNSON CITY — Scott Thompson, associate/executive pastor of University Parkway Baptist Church, Johnson City, helped the church establish a “drive-in church” five years ago.

Here is how they did it in his words.

“We ordered a small, low power, FM transmitter kit and antenna. This type of transmitter is used for schools, churches, farmers, etc. In our area we are not required to have an FCC license to operate. The range of this type of transmitter is less than half  a mile. [Read more…]

DRIVE-IN SERVICES

April 8, 2020

Church in the parking lot includes safety, gospel

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist and Reflector
lwilkey@tnbaptist.org

University Parkway Baptist Church, in Johnson City, has been holding drive-in church services for the past five years — long before the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, many churches in Tennessee are trying similar approaches to worship while complying with social distancing.

JOHNSON CITY— Five years before COVID-19 took the world by storm, University Parkway Baptist Church had recognized the need for a service for people with health issues and other concerns that prevented them from going to church.

“Our drive-in church is designed to offer a worship service to people in our region that might not be physically able or might not be comfortable coming into our building,” said Scott Thompson, associate pastor of University Parkway Baptist. [Read more…]
