COVID-19 BRINGS ISOLATION TO MANY SENIOR ADULTS

March 23, 2020

By Tess Schoonhoven
Baptist Press

NASHVILLE — At 92, Kenny Knox’s social circle revolves almost exclusively around activities at church.

“Other than attending (church), I don’t have a lot of contact with others,” he said.

But like many others, Knox’s church (West End Baptist Church in Columbia, Tenn.) has suspended its meetings to comply with government recommendations on social-distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. West End’s worship services have temporarily moved to an online streaming format.

For Knox and some other senior adults, though, that’s not a solution. [Read more…]

MISSION WORK STILL MATTERS TO WILSON

April 2, 2019

By Grace Thornton
Writer, WMU Foundation

Creely Wilson displays her Girls Auxiliary cape which she earned as a member of Girls in Action (GAs). “Being a GA was always very important to me,” said Wilson.

BRENTWOOD — Creely Wilson has been packing recently to move to her next home — a small place in a senior living community. She’s had to downsize a little bit.

But in all of the cleaning out, Wilson was certain one thing wasn’t getting left behind — a small Lottie Moon doll that’s been on her mantle for years. She has other things she loves in life, but missions tops the list.

“I’ve learned a lot from the life of Lottie,” she says of the beloved missionary to China. “She really got women started in missions.”

It’s a legacy that’s kept going with Wilson, says Betty Wiseman, a fellow church member at Brentwood Baptist Church in Tennessee — to the point that Wiseman says without hesitation that Wilson “is our Lottie Moon.”

“She’s revered in our church,” Wiseman said. “She’s a gem, a really special lady. She represents to us what it means to be a woman of God who cares, who gives and who offers servant leadership.” [Read more…]

DON’T FORGET TENNESSEE’S ‘LEAST OF THESE’

May 1, 2018

By Randy C. Davis
TBMB President & Executive Director

Randy C. Davis

I’ve got an old black and white photo of my father-in-law, Wilkerson V. Jones, standing next to Babe Ruth, one of baseball’s greatest players. Ruth of course, went on to baseball immortality and is among the sport’s pantheon of stars.

But in my book, Wilkerson went on to immortality too. His legacy is revealed in the lives he positively affected, including me. The interesting connection between Ruth and Wilkerson is that they both grew up in boys’ homes. Both had rough starts to life and it was effectively at a boys home where their lives took a turn for the better. It was people investing in them that made a difference.

Tennessee Baptists are those kinds of “investors.” Tennessee Baptists support the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes (TBCH) and Tennessee Baptist Adult Homes (TBAH) through their Cooperative Program giving, but they also go beyond that in supporting the Mother’s Day Offering for TBCH and Father’s Day Offering for TBAH. These two offerings are vitally important to both of these great organizations enabling them to provide compassionate, gospel-centered care to children and aging adults. [Read more…]

NASHVILLE — For many people, “going for a walk” is a leisurely activity.

For the members of the Striders Club, it’s serious business.

Each lap around the track at the Tusculum Hills Baptist Church family life center is purposeful for the roughly 100 individuals who make up the club. The members of the group keep detailed logs of their “mileage” and those who reach certain totals — milestones, you could say — are rewarded with various prizes, such as hats, T-shirts, jackets, and gift cards.

Granted, the club members have plenty of fun and fellowship while participating in the program. But the ultimate objective is exercise and fitness.

Created 10 years ago by Tusculum Hills Baptist Church minister of senior adults and recreation Bill Highsmith, the club is open to anyone above the age of the 16, but is predominantly comprised of senior adults. [Read more…]

SENIOR ADULT CONVERSIONS ON THE RISE?

February 6, 2018

By David Roach
Baptist Press

NASHVILLE — When evangelist Phil Waldrep agreed to preach a revival at a nursing home, he didn’t expect a huge response. After all, he reasoned, aren’t most older people already Christians?

But of the 40-60 nursing home residents who attended the services, 21 made a profession of faith in Christ as their Lord and Savior, and about 10 were later baptized at a local church. [Read more…]
