CHURCHES

Riva Lake Baptist Church, Winchester, celebrated homecoming on Aug. 13 with guest speaker Richard Craddock, pastor of First Baptist Church, Summitville.

Highland Park Baptist Church, Lawrenceburg, will hold homecoming service on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m.

Iron City First Baptist Church, Iron City, celebrated homecoming on Aug. 20.

Lucy Baptist Church, Millington, will celebrate its 147th anniversary on Sept. 17 with a time of fellowship at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday School at  9:30 a.m., and worship at 10:45 a.m. with former member Brandon Tucker preaching. Tucker currently serves as lay elder at Lakewood Baptist Church in Oakland. A fellowship meal (“potluck”) follows at noon.

Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Seymour, will hold its 100th year celebration on Sept. 24 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a covered dish lunch after morning service. Everyone is welcome to attend.

First Baptist Church, Greene-ville, will host a Yoke of Grace Women’s Brunch on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m.-Noon with guest speaker Claudia Brown. For more information, including cost, call 423-639-3194.

Green River Baptist Church, Waynesboro, burned a note on its church bus on July 30, leaving the church debt-free.

ASSOCIATIONS

Begin Anew of Middle Tennessee will hold its 20th anniversary celebration and reunion at the annual meeting of the Nashville Baptist Association on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m. at Bellevue Baptist Church, Nashville. If you plan to attend the Begin Anew reunion, RSVP to 615-244-3669.

An eight-member team from Gibson Baptist Association worked in New Bremen, Ohio, in mid-July to do survey work for a new church plant, prayerwalking, and Vacation Bible School. The team worked with their sister association to help probe for a new church start. The eight volunteers were members of New Bethlehem, Gibson, and Sugar Creek Baptist churches.

W.A. Galyon

DEATHS

W.A. Galyon died recently at his home in Seymour at the age of 92. A World War II veteran, Galyon was called to preach in 1955. He served as pastor of 14 Southern Baptist churches in the area before becoming director of missions for Sevier County Association of Baptists. Galyon was a member of Knox Creek Baptist Church, Seymour. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy. He is survived by three daughters — Gayle Henry, Helen Neas, and Patsy Bradford — and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

LEADERS

Jordan Elliott recently was licensed to preach at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, Elizabethton.

Elk River Baptist Church, Butler, recently called Larry Pearson as pastor.

Paul Graybeal has been called as pastor of State Line Baptist Church, Laurel Bloomery.

Howell Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Fayetteville, has called Scott Nichols as pastor.

Kim Margrave

Chester Slayton has been called as pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Fayetteville.

First Baptist Church, Milan, recently called Bill Kisner as minister of students/small groups/senior adults.

Kim Margrave, volunteer missions specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board, was recognized for 20 years of service with the TBMB during a staff meeting in August. She is an active member of ClearView Baptist Church, Franklin.

ENTITIES

The stone entrance, a fixture of Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes on the Brentwood campus, has been torn down due to the widening of Franklin Road. TBCH staff removed the entrance to preserve the stones for future use, according to Greg McCoy, president and treasurer of TBCH.

  • Israel Leal, left, a pastor from Venezuela, recently visited the United States and made a stop in Franklin to visit his longtime friend William Burton. Burton took his first missions trip to Venezuela during the Tennessee/Venezuela partnership in the 1980s and later became a missionary there. He is now the ethnic evangelist/church planting specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.
  • Robby and Gretta Cardwell of Fairview Baptist Church, Corryton, stand outside their tent in Clarkrange during the (Highway)127 Yard Sale held during the first week of August each year. Cardwell led a church service on Sunday, Aug. 6, for vendors and others attending the yard sale. Approximately 40 people attended the service, the largest attendance in the four years Cardwell has led the service. The 127 Yard Sale is billed as the “world’s longest yard sale.”
  • Alberta Oakley celebrated her 100th birthday at New Middleton Baptist Church in New Middleton on Aug. 6. She has been a member since 1951. Oakley taught Sunday School, discipleship training, served as financial secretary and was the church organist for many years.
  • Fulton Baptist Church, Henning, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Clay Gilbreath, director of missions for Big Hatchie Baptist Association, presents deacon James Berkley with a plaque from the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.
