LEADERS

Scott Shepherd

C. Scott Shepherd, worship and music specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board for the past six years, has resigned, effective Sept. 5, to become associate director of Renaissance at Bethel University in McKenzie. A graduate of Shorter University, Rome, Ga., and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., Shepherd earned his doctorate in worship studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. He is president of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference and has over 30 years of experience in worship and music ministry. Currently, he is interim minister of music at Forest Hills Baptist Church, Nashville. For the past six years, Shepherd has directed the Tennessee Men’s Chorale and Tennessee Ladies Chorus, as well as serving as a clinician and worship leader at state, regional and national events. For several years, he traveled and performed with his musical family, The Shepherd Family. He and his wife, Traci, have four children.

New Zion Baptist Church, Athens, ordained their new pastor, Brandon Wilcox, on Sunday, Aug. 27.

Paul Ellis, associate pastor of Maple Springs Baptist Church, Tellico Plains, was ordained on July 2.

Reed Springs Baptist Church, Philadelphia, ordained Ronnie McDowell into the ministry on July 8. He has been called to serve as senior pastor of Riverdale Baptist Church in Georgia.

Larry Pugh has announced plans to retire as pastor of Prospect Baptist Church, Walland, at the end of August.

Bill Ailey has announced he will resign as pastor of Meadowview Baptist Church, Maryville, at the end of August.

DEATHS

Garnette Hogan

Garnette Hogan, human resources manager for the Executive Board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention (now Tennessee Baptist Mission Board) from 1985-2007 died July 11 at the age of 81. She also wrote preschool leadership materials for the Baptist Sunday School Board (now Lifeway Christian Resources. She was an active member of Brentwood Baptist Church, Brentwood, from 1984 until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Hogan. She is survived by two children and eight grandchildren.

Phyllis Jean Baker, wife of Arkie Baker, pastor at Ellejoy Baptist Church, Seymour, for 55 years, died July 16.

CHURCHES

Williams Chapel Baptist Church, Springfield, will hold its 137th homecoming day on Sept. 24 at 11 a.m., followed by a catered lunch. David Dean will be the guest speaker. A special offering for the cemetery fund will be collected.

Charleston Baptist Church, Stanton, will have revival services Sept. 10-13 with evangelist Phil Glisson of Memphis.

  • Robby and Gretta Cardwell, members of Fairview Knox Church, Corryton, are regular vendors during the Annual 127 Yard Sale, held in early August. It is billed as the world’s longest yard sale, spanning 690 miles through six states. The Cardwells set up shop at the Cumberland Mountain General Store in Clarkrange and for about 10 years, he has led a worship service on Sundays. Attendance varies from year to year from six to as many as 30, Cardwell reported.

  • A group of children from Oak Valley Baptist Church, Franklin, recently toured the Missions Mobilization Center in Mount Juliet to learn about disaster relief work from Garry Maddox and to work on a mission project at the MMC.
  • David Haynes, director of missions for Tennessee Valley Baptist Association, recently presented Dan Frank of Bethel Baptist Church, Spring City, a plaque from the Historical Committee of the Tennessee Baptist Convention commemorating 200 years as a church.   • Kenneth Williams, who is semiretired, was recognized recently by Tumbling Creek Baptist Church of Gleason (where he is a member) for being in the ministry for 50 years. Kenneth has pastored several churches in Weakley and Obion County plus served churches in Kentucky.
