Bob Brown

Former Tennessee Baptist Mission Board staff member Bob Brown has been elected vice chairman of the trustees of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. Brown is executive director of Lakeway Christian Schools and interim pastor of Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church, Knoxville. He and his wife, Linnie, are members of First Baptist Church, Dandridge.

Danny Dixon began serving April 1 as interim pastor of Battle Creek Baptist Church, Springfield.

Jolley Springs Baptist Church, Gleason, has called Richard Brewer as pastor.

Jamie Sellers, worship pastor at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, Maryville, recently resigned to become worship pastor at Briarlake Baptist Church, Decatur, Ga.

DEATHS

Gary Linn Carver, retired pastor of multiple churches in Indiana, Alabama, and Tennessee, and longtime pastor of First Baptist Church, Chattanooga, died March 21.  He was 76. Gary is survived by his wife Sharlon, two sons, four grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Troy Edgar Key, retired pastor of churches in Mississippi, Texas and Tennessee and longtime pastor of Everett Hills Baptist Church, Maryville, died April 8. He was 77. He is survived by his wife, Roseanne, two children and four grandchildren.

Robert E. Simmons, retired pastor of several churches including Forge Ridge Baptist Church, Harrogate, and Head Of Barren Baptist Church, New Tazewell, died March 15. He was 79. He is survived by his wife, Eula, four children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

  • The young adult group from Sylvia Baptist Church, Dickson, recently attended the Young Adult Conference sponsored by the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board at Thompson Station Church in Thompson’s Station. The group was led by Danny and Liane Keaton, center, and Butch and Lisa Williams, far right.
  • Pastor Johnny McCartney, left, of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Bradford, accepts a plaque from the Historical Committee of the Tennessee Baptist Convention from Danny Sinquefield, Harvest 1 team leader for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.
  • Pastor Rodney Duckett and his wife Michelle were honored for his 10th anniversary as pastor of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Mount Juliet, on April 16. The church hosted a surprise luncheon and Mike Cox, chairman of deacons, presented the pastor with a token of appreciation for his service.
  • Liberty Baptist Church, Covington, has hosted Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers since early April when tornadoes swept through their community. “The pastor and members of Liberty Baptist have been gracious hosts of our Incident Command and teams. We are extremely grateful for the use of their building and the love they have shown. I pray that what they have done will have a tremendous impact on assisting their church in reaching their community.” Jones said.
  • Brentwood Baptist Church, Brentwood, celebrated the groundbreaking of its new permanent home to the Avenue South Campus on Sunday, April 30. The event took place at the new location, 901 Acklen Avenue in Nashville, and marked the beginning of the construction phase for the new facility. Nine years ago, Brentwood Baptist Church started its third campus, the Church at Avenue South, to reach families and young adults in Davidson County. Today, Brentwood Baptist has nine regional campuses across Middle Tennessee. “The groundbreaking of the Avenue South Campus is an exciting step forward for our church and community,” said Mike Glenn, senior pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church. Speaking is Aaron Bryant, campus and teaching pastor, The Church at Avenue South.
