LEADERS

James Hickey

James Hickey, director of missions for Union Baptist Association, Sparta, has resigned after serving in the position for just over five years. Prior to service in Union, he served as pastor of East Commerce Baptist Church in Lewisburg for 26 years, where he retired in 2012, after 44 years in ministry.  Other Tennessee churches in which he served include First Baptist Church, Benton; Saulsbury Baptist Church, Saulsbury; and Shiloh Baptist Church, Ocoee.  Hickey has degrees from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis and Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville. He has served on various committees in the Tennessee Baptist Convention while still a pastor. He will continue to serve in Union until a new director of missions is called. First Baptist Church, Rutherford, recently called Mike Kemper as pastor.

Johnny McCartney has been called as pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Bradford.

Central Baptist Church, Alcoa, recently called Jimmy Rimer as interim  pastor and Chuck Howell as interim music leader.

Ben Maddox

Ben Maddox, Baptist Campus Ministry specialist at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville was recently recognized for five years of service with the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board. He also has served as a campus minister in Mississippi and Arkansas. He and his wife, Karen, have a son, Brock.

Two Gibson Baptist Association pastors recently resigned: Zach McCain at First Baptist Church, Rutherford, and Steve Hemann at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Bradford.

Trinity Baptist Church, Manchester, has called

Allison Hoyle

as full-time children’s ministry director. She has a degree in family ministry from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and served on a church staff in Texas.

The Shepherd’s Field Baptist Church, Martin, welcomed Josh Carden as pastor on Sept. 6. He and his wife, Meagan, have two children, Ethan and Nate.

Mark Oliver has been called as minister to children at First Baptist Church, Hickory Withe.

First Baptist Church, Somerville, has called Ron Thompson as worship media director and Emily Waldon as communications director.

CHURCHES

First Baptist Church, Pegram, will hold revival services Oct. 11-14 with guest evangelist Jonas Taylor of Lebanon. Raymond Ashmore will lead the music.

Rome Baptist Church, Lebanon, will hold revival services Oct. 11-14 with different speakers each night. Robert Hammer will preach a “Chalk Art” message at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11. Monday through Wednesday services begin at 7 p.m. Speakers are: Terry Wilkerson, Oct. 12;  Glenn Denton, Oct. 13; and Ronnie Owens, Oct. 14. The Nesbitt Family will serve as worship leaders each evening.

First Baptist Church, Estill Springs, will host The Tribute Quartet at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25. Admission is free. A love offering will be taken.

DEATHS

Lillian Hammett Bradley, 97, died Aug. 14. She was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church, Clarksville, for 75 years. She taught Sunday School to all ages and helped establish the library that now bears her name — the Lillian H. Bradley Library at First Baptist Church. She also established and taught in the FBC kindergarten program.

EVENT

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., will sponsor a “Caring Well During COVID” live conversation on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The session will focus on how pastors can help parents and families during COVID. For information, contact Paul Akin at pakin@sbts.edu.

  • William and Linda Viel, center, cut the ribbon Sept. 21 at Carson-Newman University’s campus ministries building alongside, from left, board of trustees chairman Bob Gay, student Grayson Boyer and acting vice president for student services Gloria Walker. The university renamed the building in the Viels’ honor. The Viels are graduates of Carson-Newman and spent more than 40 years sharing the gospel around the world, from inner cities to underground churches in the Soviet Union and classrooms in the Ukraine.
  • Woodland Mills First Baptist Church honored their pastor Rick Burton Aug. 29 during a reception honoring him on his retirement after 29 years as pastor. Burton served as interim pastor in 1991 for several months before being called as full time in October of that year. His last Sunday was Aug. 30. With him and his wife Joy are his son Josh, daughter-in-law Mallory and their three children: Abby on far left with Brody and Ava in front of their mother.
  • Charles Timberlake, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church, Covington, was honored by the church on Aug. 23 on 60 years of ministry. Timberlake has been at Liberty Baptist since 1991. He also has served as pastor of Bethel Yorkville Baptist Church, Yorkville; New Hope Baptist Church, Dyer; Ward’s Grove Baptist Church, Lexington; Midway Baptist Church, Dyer; and Shelby Forest Baptist Church, Millington. He was called into the ministry in 1954 and was ordained into the ministry in 1960. He and his wife, Bobbye, have four children, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He holds a framed letter with photos from his ministry that the church presented to him.
