TENNESSEE BAPTIST DR TO PROVIDE AID FOLLOWING EARTHQUAKES

MOUNT JULIET — Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief is partnering with sister organizations of the field to bring help, hope and healing to people affected by multiple, massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, according to Wes Jones, disaster relief specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.

More than 22,000 are dead following two major earthquakes that rocked southern Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6. Thousands are injured and millions of people have been affected by the disaster.

In Turkey alone, more than 64,000 have been injured as a result of the quakes and aftershocks, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

He said nearly 7,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed.

Officials from both countries say dozens of countries are assisting in recovery and relief efforts.

Due to security concerns in the area, we are not being requested to send teams,” Jones said.

“That is why we are supporting the effort through the connections we have that already have a presence in the area and have access to bring the materials,” he continued. “We are also seeking funds to help provide the shipping of these items and purchase items that can be obtained in the country,” Jones said.
