EVANGELICALS BACK IMMIGRATION REFORM, INCREASED BORDER SECURITY

February 28, 2024

By Aaron Earls
Lifeway Christian Resources writer

BRENTWOOD — American evangelicals have complex perspectives on immigration and want a nuanced political response, but most want Congress to act soon.

A Lifeway Research study sponsored by the Evangelical Immigration Table found evangelicals are increasingly concerned about the number of recent immigrants to the U.S. but still believe Christians have a responsibility to care for those who are in the country illegally. While most want to secure the border to prevent additional illegal immigration, evangelicals also advocate for a path to citizenship for those already in the country.

“While many evangelicals fear that our nation is harmed by the volume of recent immigrants, more feel responsible to show compassion,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research. “The urgency continues to grow among evangelicals for Congress to act this year to improve laws around immigration.” [Read more…]

February 28, 2024

By Tim Ellsworth
Union University news office

Victor Hou delivers the W.D. Powell Missions Lecture at Union University in Jackson.

JACKSON — Lostness in the world is the greatest problem Christians face, Victor Hou told a Union University audience Feb. 1 as part of the annual W.D. Powell Missions Lecture.

“Despite wars, despite human trafficking, despite homelessness, crime, lots of other things, lostness is the only problem that will stay with us for eternity,” said Hou, who serves as associate vice president for global advance at the International Mission Board.

Named after a Union alumnus and a pioneer Southern Baptist missionary to Mexico in the late 1800s, the W.D. Powell Missions Lecture Series is cosponsored by Union’s School of Theology and Missions and the IMB to honor Union alumni who have served in international missions. [Read more…]

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist & Reflector

Leaders involved in the ministry of White Oak Baptist Church’s “Access Campus) are, from left, John Trewhella, associate pastor at White Oak; Timothy Li, pastor of the Chinese Christian Church of Chattanooga; Tony Wilson, pastor of White Oak Baptist Church, Chattanooga; and Dennis Culbreth director of missions, Hamilton County Baptist Association.

CHATTANOOGA — When the membership of Chamberlain Memorial Baptist Church in Chattanooga began to decline, the 30 or so remaining members contacted White Oak Baptist Church and pastor Tony Wilson eight years ago about a possible merger between the two congregations.

Wilson was well acquainted with Chamberlain Memorial, having served as their youth minister nearly 30 years earlier.

“I loved the people there and God worked in a sweet way,” Wilson recalled.

Wilson took the proposal to the leadership at White Oak and after much prayer and consideration, the two churches merged with Chamberlain Memorial giving its buildings and property to White Oak to use as a satellite campus, now known as the Access Campus of White Oak Baptist Church. [Read more…]

PIGEON FORGE  — Pastor Rich Murray of Mountain View Baptist Church in Johnson City is  bivocational and proud of it.

“If it worked for (the Apostle) Paul, why wouldn’t it work for me?” he asked.

Murray observed that Paul modeled what it meant to be bivocational. “There is nothing more biblical,” he affirmed. “I believe that to be anything else would be a demotion for me because I’m called to be a bivocational pastor. I have very little doubt about it.”

Not only is he bivocational at Mountain View, so is the entire ministerial staff. The only full-time staff person is Catie Fair, the office administrator. [Read more…]

The incorporation papers for Abuse Response Commission — a new 501(C)(3) organization — are prepped and ready to be submitted in South Carolina.

With ARC comes a permanent home for abuse reform in the SBC, according to members of the Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force participating in a Feb. 20 news conference in Nashville. ARC is not a Southern Baptist entity and not part of the Cooperative Program allocation structure.

ARITF chair and North Carolina pastor Josh Wester also shared the information the night before during the opening session of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee’s February trustee meeting.

‘Only viable path’

“After painstakingly evaluating and exhausting every option, there is broad agreement that the best way to accomplish [our goals] is through an independent organization,” Wester said. [Read more…]

FIVE AREAS OF HEALTHY LIVING

February 21, 2024

By Chris Turner
Communications Director, Tennessee Baptist Mission Board

COVINGTON — During his recent mental health seminar, pastor Ronny Raines, of First Baptist Church, Clarksville, provided his thoughts on questions to consider in regard to how pastors and ministry leaders can take care of themselves. Here are five key areas to consider:

Mental: Are you depressed? Are you anxious? Do you need professional help? Is there margin in your life and ministry? Are you able to disconnect and relax when you’re away from the office? Do you have any recreational interests or hobbies?

Physical: Are you getting enough rest and sleep? When did you last see a doctor? Are you fatigued? Are you exercising several days a week? Are you eating a balanced diet? When was your last vacation? Are you taking a day off every week?

Spiritual: How is your walk with Jesus? Are you reading the Bible for personal spiritual development? Is your prayer life pleasing to the Lord? Is worship a lifestyle for you? Are you fulfilling God’s call? Is the joy of your salvation and call missing?

Relational: How is your marriage relationship? Are you and your spouse talking, dating and enjoying life together? Are you spending quality time with your kids and grandkids? What would your kids or grandkids say about your time with them? How many intimate friends do you have in life and ministry?

Financial: Are you giving as God says? Are you living on a budget? Are you and your wife arguing over money? Are you saving for the day you retire or redeploy? Do you have a will/estate plan? B&R — Videos of the forum can be viewed HERE and HERE.
