NOV. 15: CONFRONT SIN

November 9, 2015

By Dr. Terry Kirby
Senior Pastor, Alpha Baptist Church, Morristown

ss-lifeFocal Passage: Daniel 5:17-28

As October fades into November so ends another season of Halloween.  Halloween is big business.  Hollywood has made countless movies designed to scare even the bravest of the brave.  The movies that are the most effective in trying to frighten their audiences are the ones that seem real. Also, farmers turn their fields into haunted mazes.  Stores fill their shelves with candy, costumes, and decorations that can turn the average home into a haunted house. Halloween also turns many people into fanatics about the celebration of all things evil. Sadly many Christians join in these festivities honoring and celebrating rituals that border on satanic worship.  Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ should never mingle the sacred and the satanic.  This action dishonors the temple of God. Believer, you are the temple of God.  [Read more…]

NOV. 8: WHERE WICKEDNESS RULES

November 3, 2015

By Derek Westmoreland
Senior Pastor, Hopewell Baptist Church, Savannah

Focal Passage: Genesis 18:20-25; 19:12-16

ss-exploreWickedness brings attention. Sodom and Gomorrah were known for their rampant sexual sin that flowed from a complete rebellion against the ways of the Lord (Genesis 13:13). The sins were public and the guilty were unrepentant. The iniquities of those in Sodom provoked the Lord to respond in verse 21. God responds as we should. He immediately acted upon what He had heard. He went down to see for Himself. We should not act without confirmation that what we have been told is indeed true.

Intercession pleads for grace. In verse 23, Abraham interceded on behalf of Sodom. Why did Abraham intercede? (1) He desired that God spare the righteous and (2) Abraham did not want the lost people in Sodom to perish forever. We are to hate sin but we are also to pity sinners. Abraham interceded for Sodom and Gomorrah because he knew more about their future than they did. To be an effective intercessor you must be personally obedient to His Word and you must be close enough to Him to know Him to a greater degree than others do. Abraham knew the Lord in a way that others did not and therefore he knew the future of the cities. [Read more…]

NOV. 8: LIVE HUMBLY

November 3, 2015

By Dr. Terry Kirby
Senior Pastor, Alpha Baptist Church, Morristown

Focal Passage: Daniel 4:28-35

ss-lifeAmericans are nostalgic concerning their movies. Celebrations occur as the movies of the past are remembered on special anniversaries. One recent celebration was for the late 1980s trilogy “Back to the Future.” These movies are about a time-traveling teenager and his scientist mentor. As they travel into the past or the future they try not to change the future by their actions while visiting the past. The main reason for all the hype was that the second movie was set in October 2015. It was fun to see how the predictions of the movie concerning life in 2015 matched or conflicted with present day reality.
As the events of Daniel chapter four unfold we encounter a powerful story concerning a prediction about the future. This story contains a mysterious dream, an all-powerful king, and a guarantee from a man of God that everything treasured by the king would be taken away from him in the future if he does not honor God. This is no fictional tale. Hollywood’s best attempt at storytelling cannot compare to this real story in the Word of God. [Read more…]

NOV. 1: A NEW NAME

October 26, 2015

By Derek Westmoreland
Senior Pastor, Hopewell Baptist Church, Savannah

ss-exploreFocal Passage: Genesis 17:1-8, 15-22

God made His covenant with Abram for the first time in chapter 12. In chapter 15, the Lord reminded Abram that He would keep His covenant and now we learn in chapter 17, that God again confirms His covenant with Abram.

According to verse 1, Abram was 99 years old. That confirms that Abram is 14 years older than he was when the Lord spoke to him in chapter 15 and 24 years older than when he arrived in the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:4). Now, Abram has a 13-year-old son named Ishmael (16:16).

Who God is. In 17:1, God refers to Himself as God Almighty (El-Shaddai). El-Shaddai is translated as “God Almighty” 48 times in the Old Testament but this is the first time. The phrase is used in 17:1 for God is about to demonstrate His power in bringing forth the son of promise. [Read more…]

NOV. 1: STAND COURAGEOUSLY

October 26, 2015

By Dr. Terry Kirby
Senior Pastor, Alpha Baptist Church, Morristown

ss-lifeFocal Passage: Daniel 3:13-18, 26-28

Most of us know one. Most of us have had one in our family. Most of us are in awe of their courage and all of us are indebted to them. The members of the United States military, both past and present, are these exceptional Americans who have given up their own lives to protect our freedom. What makes them heroes is their willingness to take a life or death stand for the noble cause of freedom. Today’s military risk everything not knowing if they will live one more moment to enjoy their own freedom earned by a previous generation of heroes.

The Bible is filled with stories of how followers of God have had to take similar stands for a cause. This cause is larger than freedom. This cause is Truth, which is the Word of God. Christians, unknown to most of the world, give up their lives every day as they bravely stand on the truth.

The events in Daniel chapter three occur 23 years after Daniel interpreted the dream for King Nebuchadnezzar. The attention shifts away from Daniel to his three friends: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The “Three”, as they will be called, vividly show us how to stand on the truth. [Read more…]

OCT. 25: WAITING FOR THE PROMISE

October 20, 2015

By Derek Westmoreland
Senior Pastor, Hopewell Baptist Church, Savannah

ss-exploreFocal Passage: Genesis 15:1-7, 13-16

So far in our journey through Genesis we have addressed God’s creation, the institution of marriage and family, the first murder, the fall and its repercussions, the flood and its judgment, the scattering of the people and finally God establishing His covenant with Abram. Now we see Abram waiting for the promises of the covenant to be fulfilled.

Abram is impatient (vv. 1-3). Since chapter 12, Abram has experienced financial increase (ch. 13) and military victory (ch. 14). Abram, though victorious in Egypt was shaken by what transpired. His faith was therefore weak so the Lord addressed Abram by way of vision (ch. 12:1). The Lord tells Abram to not fear and then reminds Abram that He would be his shield. Abram had just won battles therefore the Lord used the combat reference (shield) to confirm to Abram that He would protect him and that Abram’s reward would indeed be great. [Read more…]

OCT. 25: PRAY FERVENTLY

October 20, 2015

By Dr. Terry Kirby
Senior Pastor, Alpha Baptist Church, Morristown

ss-lifeFocal Passage: Daniel 2:13-21, 26-28a

I don’t know if you are like me when it comes to shopping but I can only endure it under certain conditions. I only like to shop when I have a predetermined list and a set number of minutes. These trips can take a turn for the worse when I hear the cries of a child echoing through isles the result of a parent saying, “No!” Depending upon the severity of the cries, the response can be called a temper tantrum. Adults are tragically guilty of these same temper tantrums.

The events recorded in Daniel chapter 2 shows the temper tantrum of King Nebuchadnezzar and the mature actions of Daniel, a teenager in exile from Judah. The king had had a nightmare that deeply troubled him. He wanted his wise men to tell him the dream and its interpretation. To put it in different terms, the king was asking them to draw a picture that he was thinking of and also tell him what it meant. The wise men declared that it would be impossible for anyone to fulfill his demands. Nebuchadnezzar apparently had grown tired of the wise men’s lack of help when he really needed it. They seemed to cost him more than they were worth. In response, the king ordered that all the wise men were to be killed. This order would include the lives of Daniel and his three friends: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Nebuchadnezzar’s temper tantrum would cost many lives. What would Daniel do? [Read more…]

Oct. 18: When God Calls

October 12, 2015

By Derek Westmoreland
Senior Pastor, Hopewell Baptist Church, Savannah

ss-exploreFocal Passage: Genesis 12:1-9

As chapter 12 begins, we find Abram who was introduced in chapter 11 (v. 26) pushed to the forefront of the story. In verses 1-9 Abram is called to leave his place of comfort for the land God promises to give to him and his descendants. It is the spiritual picture of one leaving their old way of life and beginning a new life by faith.

I. God calls. In verse 1, the Lord (Yahweh) commands Abram to leave behind his familiar surroundings. First, he is to leave his land. Second, Abram is called to leave behind his relatives. Third, the Lord calls Abram to leave behind his father’s house which is to leave behind his reputation (social clout). Specifically, Abram was leaving behind his well-known and well-respected name to go to a land where he would be unknown. His reputation would not go with him. The obedient act of faith would demonstrate that Abram desired to find his community, security, and identity, not in the things of the world; but in the Lord. [Read more…]

Oct. 18: Develop Conviction

October 12, 2015

By Terry Kirby
Senior Pastor, Alpha Baptist Church, Morristown

ss-lifeFocal Passage: Daniel 1:3-5, 8-13, 17-19

Think about it! Will anyone remember that you lived in 1,000 years? Will anybody remember that you lived in 100 years? Sad for some, only a fraction of one percent of the people who have ever lived will survive in the memories of future generations. In our world, halls of fame have been established to help remember the best of the best. How do people make it into the hall of fame? They make it because they are the best in their field.

The greatest and most long lasting “hall of fame” is the Word of God. Why? The Word of God is the living and eternal record of the lives of the best of the best of those who obeyed God’s Word and lived with an unshakable conviction of the same. Daniel, along with his three friends, are members of God’s Hall of Fame. [Read more…]

Oct. 11: Scattered!

October 7, 2015

By Derek Westmoreland
Senior Pastor, Hopewell Baptist Church, Savannah

ss-exploreFocal Passage: Genesis 11:1-9

It is a humbling situation (i.e. foreign land) when you cannot verbally communicate with those around you. In Genesis 11:1-9 we find God responding to the rebellion of man by confusing their language. As a result of what happened that day, we now have well over 6,000 languages on planet earth.

I. The nature of man is rebellion (vv. 1-4) In verses 1-2 we read that the entire population of the earth traveled together to the plain of Shinar. The people settling in Shinar, was in direct rebellion to God’s command in Genesis 9:1 to “fill the earth.” In verse 3 we learn that they used brick for stone and rock for mortar. When we arrive at verse 4 we find the three motivations they had for building the city and the tower. [Read more…]
