May 3: Stick With Encouragement

April 27, 2015

Focal Passage: Acts 9:26-28, 11:21-26

Like a lot of folks, the name by which I am called is not my real name. From birth, my parents referred to me by the nickname “Jay.” Few people would recognize me by my legal name. Today’s Bible lesson is about a man whose formal name was “Joseph.” But he is much better known by his nickname “Barnabas.” In fact, of the 30 times he is mentioned in the New Testament, only once is he not called “Barnabas.” [Read more…]

April 26: Hard Questions, Harder Answers

Focal Passage: Habakkuk 1:1-6, 12-13; 2:1-4

Have you ever found yourself in a situation you thought was bad, and suddenly you hear it is going to get worse? Maybe it was a sickness turned deadly. Maybe you discovered the job is about to be “phased out.” Maybe your troubled kid turns up in jail. Whatever the predicament is, the outlook is bleak. Then you are like Habakkuk; a man who carried a burden of the suffering of his people.

Habakkuk had questions for God. Not merely questions but complaints. He wanted to know why things were falling apart around him. When Habakkuk considered his surroundings, violence and oppression were everywhere. Strife was ongoing and conflict was escalating. Israel was tearing itself apart from the inside. Wickedness was having a “field day” and it looked like true justice was gone. In the midst of this terrible situation God announces to Habakkuk that things are going to get worse. God is going to use the pagan Chaldeans to enact destruction on Israel. The Chaldeans are swift, merciless, and proud. But they will be allowed to wreak havoc on the people of God. [Read more…]

April 26: Stick With Love

April 21, 2015

Focal Passage: John 15:9-14

In 1984 the musical band “Foreigner” declared “I want to know what love is! I want you to show me!” Those two statements can be thought of as a prayer. We certainly long to know what love is. Who better to show us than the Lord Himself? In this passage, Jesus helps His disciples know how to recognize love.

Love looks like obedience. “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, (John 15:10). Love is not a mere feeling, though it certainly will stir feelings within you. Rather, love is an act of the will. Oswald Sanders affirmed this when he wrote, “We are each as close to God as we choose to be.” It is a voluntary decision to obey. While we can be forced by suppression into compliance, genuine love freely chooses ongoing obedience. [Read more…]

Focal Passage: Ephesians 1:7-10, 18-23

Have you ever stopped to notice that our National Anthem begins with a question? We usually do not sing it with the vocal inflection of a question. Still, the opening line asks the listener, “Oh, say can you see?”

Some of Paul’s opening words in the letter of Ephesians express his prayer that these believers “see” some things: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know …” (Ephesians 1:18 NIV). The phrase “eyes of your heart” is found only here in the Bible. It is a beautiful picture of a person’s inner self that possesses the ability to see ultimate reality. What are the desired objects you need to see? [Read more…]

April 19: A Refined People

Focal Passage: Zechariah 13:1-9

Have you ever found yourself in a place hazardous to your health? Maybe it is an unsafe neighborhood, an emotionally unhealthy job, or just someplace you feel you are in imminent physical danger. Then you in some small way can identify with the false prophets in Zechariah’s day. God was cleansing the house of David from sin and impurity and if you found yourself on the side of unrighteousness you were running for cover. False prophets were lying about their occupation, hiding evidence of their craft, and even their own parents would turn on them. These prophets were being judged for their deception; making way for God to enact His own refining work on the people of God. [Read more…]

Focal Passage: Luke 24:19-35

Many people have experienced the anticipation of waiting for something. As a child I did not receive presents at just any time. I had to wait for either my birthday or Christmas for something I wanted. Being a young one this seemed like eternity. As an adult I have also experienced the longings for a certain job or spouse. Results did not seem to come quickly. [Read more…]

Focal Passage: Acts 1:3-11

We spend a lot of time waiting. We wait in line at the post office or “check out” lane of the grocery store. We wait to see the doctor or dentist. We wait “on hold” to speak on the telephone to someone in customer service. We wait to get on a ride at an amusement park. We wait in traffic. [Read more…]

Focal Passage: Luke 24:1-12

The resurrection of Jesus is essential to the Christian faith. The hope of all the followers of Christ hinges on this being true. Jesus spoke often about the events that must transpire in order for Him to complete His mission. The resurrection early that Sunday morning is Jesus coming through on His promise. [Read more…]

Focal Passage: Matthew 28:1-10

On June 2, 2008 Michael O’Neill of Middlesbrough, England, decided to take a last minute trip to Australia to visit a friend. He did not tell anyone of his plans. When his neighbors, who had not seen him in several days, grew worried, they called the police. The police broke down the door of his apartment only to find no sign of O’Neill nor any indication of where he went. Weeks later, with no further evidence, a death notice for Michael O’Neill appeared in the local paper. O’Neill arrived back home on Aug. 11 to find his front door mysteriously smashed. For several days, wherever he went, people grabbed hold of him saying, “I thought you were dead!” [Read more…]

Focal Passage: Zechariah 8:1-8; 9:9-12

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a book turned into a movie called Return of the King. The premise of the book is a king must rise up from a certain blood line to defeat evil and bring peace to Middle Earth (fictional place in Tolkien’s works). In the book a king does take his rightful place on the throne, rallies the troops, and turns back the tide of evil. He does so riding a warhorse with soldiers behind him. These images are similar to the final days depicted in the book of Revelation. [Read more…]
