OCT. 9: ONE GREAT TASK

October 4, 2016

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: II Timothy 2:1-10

The other day my son brought home a science test with a score of 85 and a note that he could retake the exam with no penalty.  However, his response was measured.  He said, “I think I did good enough.”  People often respond in this way to tasks in their life from the important to the mundane.  Instead of making things the best they can, they often settle for making them merely good enough.   Believing in excellence and seeing no downside, I encouraged my son to study and retake the exam.  He did and made a perfect score. OCT. 2: LIVING IN RELATIONSHIP

September 26, 2016

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: I Peter 3:1-12

We have names for the ways we are connected with other people. Father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, boss, and many other terms express our relationships. We live connected to others.  Each connection we have with others brings with it a responsibility to learn how to live in that relationship. I Peter 3:1-8 shares vital guidance for the primary family relationship of husband and wife.  [Read more…]

OCT. 2: ONE GREAT COMMITMENT

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Romans 10:1-3, 8b-13

I was in the Walmart checkout line recently, impatiently waiting my turn (don’t judge me), when I glanced at the shirt of the man in front of me. It made the observation that “only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you; Jesus Christ and the American soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.”

While I had seen this quote before, it took on new meaning as I prepared for this Sunday School lesson. Most religions in the world, including the Jews of Paul’s day, are very zealous for their beliefs. At the core of these beliefs is the idea good works can earn one favor with God.  [Read more…]

SEP. 25: LIVING AS STRANGERS

September 20, 2016

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: I Peter 2:11-20

All of us begin life as strangers. When forced from our mother’s womb, we enter an environment in which we are strangers. Hopefully, bonding with parents and becoming accustomed to the strange sights, sounds, and touch to which one is subjected will soon lead to one belonging. I Peter was written to Christians who needed to know how to function as a minority people in unfamiliar surroundings. Peter reminded them that they were foreigners and exiles among pagan people. As a baby is forced from the mother’s womb, they had been forced from their homeland, thus they were exiles and strangers. The first word of I Peter 2:12 was good advice — “live.” [Read more…]

SEP. 25: ONE GREAT SAVIOR

September 20, 2016

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Romans 5:6-11

I recently watched a team from Goodlettsville compete in the Little League World Series. They came up just short, but congratulations to them on a great season. One of the interesting things of note during the competition was the pitch count. This count restricted the young stars from pitching unnecessarily long games and perhaps injuring themselves in the process. This required a bit of strategy on the part of the coaches, because after 85 pitches, the player had to stop pitching no matter what the situation was in the game at the time.  [Read more…]

SEP. 18: ONE GREAT PROBLEM

September 12, 2016

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: Romans 3:9-12,19-20, 23

It is popular today to discuss whether or not it is relevant or important to name the problem.  Does not identifying the problem make solving it easier? I would argue without proper identification of a problem, a solution is nearly impossible to find.

So, why do people today seem to find it so difficult to name a problem? I believe it is because of their feelings about the problem. It is easy to armchair quarterback, or in other words to offer solutions from the outside looking in. However, when a problem hits close to home and becomes personal, by invading your life or inner circle, it becomes so much harder to name the problem and take the necessary steps to solve it.  [Read more…]

SEP. 18: BUILDING OUR FAITH

September 12, 2016

Focal Passage: I Peter 2:1-10Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For Life

Charlie Brown said to Lucy: “Lucy, wouldn’t it be great, knowing what we know now, to get to live our lives over?” Lucy responded: “Charlie Brown, what do we know now?” Not even Christians get to live their lives over, but persons who receive Jesus as their Savior, do get to live a new life.

“Therefore” in I Peter 2:1 refers back to I Peter 1:23: “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” The implication is that the new life will be a different kind of life because the Christian is born of imperishable seed. This should remind one of what Jesus said to Nicodemus: “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (John 3:6 NIV).  Peter speaks to the change that believers experience when he says: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (I Peter 2:3, NIV).  [Read more…]

SEP. 11: BE HOLY

September 5, 2016

By Hoyt Wilson
Pastor, Flatwoods Baptist Church, Holladay

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage: I Peter 1:3-9

A boy scrubbed clean and dressed in his Sunday best went outside to wait for the rest of the family before church. He could not, however resist the puddles from the night’s rain. He was wet and dirty when he went back into the house. Mom was unhappy and fussed. “I’m sorry, Mom,” he said. “All right, now go wash and change clothes,” she responded. “But, Mom,” he said, “I don’t want to be clean, I just want to be forgiven.”

Isn’t that the attitude Peter was resisting and warning against? Forgiveness and conversion begin with the call of Christ and must be an act of one’s will as Christ is received and self is surrendered. “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance,” Peter advised. Christians are not perfect, but they must be committed to allowing the Holy Spirit to continually guide them in the direction of holiness. “Be holy, as I am holy” is not a suggestion. It is a command from God. No saved person can remain as he was in his sin. [Read more…]

SEP. 11: ONE GREAT PURPOSE

September 5, 2016

By Justin Randolph
Pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Sevierville

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeFocal Passage: Psalm 33:6-9, 13-15; Colossians 1:15-17

One of the things I do not love to do is put things together for my children.  I love getting things they need and sometimes want. I also love helping them learn to use the things in question, but I do not love the phrase “Some assembly required.” And the reason I do not love it is the instructions. Invariably I am left with a piece of plastic, rubber or frame and have no idea where it goes or its intended purpose.

Everything has a purpose and every person has a purpose. The general purpose of everyone is to know God and have a relationship with Him. But, I believe God also has a specific purpose and mission for your life and mine. God spoke to Jeremiah the prophet telling him that his purpose was determined while in his mother’s womb. SEP. 4: A LIVING HOPE

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleFocal Passage:  I Peter 1:3-9

Some years ago a submarine sank off the coast of New England. Rescue operations began as soon as possible and divers located the vessel on the bottom of the ocean. As the divers approached the ship, they heard metallic clanging — someone was striking the inner wall of the sub with a metal object. The divers stopped to listen and realized that a message in Morse code was being tapped out from inside the sub — “Is there hope?” [Read more…]
