Focal Passage: Mark 13:24-37
What does the text say? Mark 13:24-37 contains Jesus’ words about His second coming. He paints a vivid picture of cosmic events that will accompany His return: “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.”
Jesus then emphasizes the suddenness and unpredictability of His return, comparing it to a master returning home after a journey. He instructs His disciples and all believers to “watch” and be ready for His return, for no one knows the day or hour.
What does the text mean? This passage conveys the certainty of Christ’s second coming and the importance of readiness. The cosmic signs described by Jesus signal the culmination of God’s redemptive plan. The darkened sun and falling stars represent the extraordinary nature of this event. Furthermore, the master’s return illustrates that Jesus will come at an unexpected moment, catching people by surprise. Therefore, believers must be vigilant, living in anticipation of His return and not be caught off guard.
How does the text apply? Here are four ways.
1. Live in readiness: Jesus’ return is certain, but its timing is unknown. Therefore, live each day in readiness for His coming. Be spiritually prepared, continually growing in your faith and obedience.
2. Watch and pray: Just as Jesus urged His disciples to watch, we must also be vigilant in prayer. Prayer keeps us connected to God and helps us stay focused on His will, especially as we await His return.
3. Share the gospel: As we anticipate Christ’s return, we should be motivated to share the gospel with others. Our mission is to lead people to salvation in Christ, so they too can be ready for His return.
4. Continue faithfully in service: The master’s commendation of faithful servants upon His return reminds us to be faithful in our service to God. Use your talents and resources for His glory, knowing that He will reward your faithfulness.
James Petigru Boyce once said, “The object of our Lord’s return is to reward His faithful servants.” This quote underscores the importance of faithfulness and readiness as we await Christ’s return.
In conclusion, Mark 13:24-37 emphasizes Jesus’ promise to return for His followers. The cosmic signs and the analogy of the master’s return highlight the certainty and suddenness of this event. As believers, we are called to live in readiness, watch and pray, share the gospel and be faithful in our service to God. Let us eagerly await His return, knowing that our faithfulness will be richly rewarded when He comes again. B&R — Tyler is pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Elizabethton.
