Jonathan Akin has been named Carson-Newman’s new vice president for Church Relations and Campus Ministries.
JEFFERSON CITY — Carson-Newman University president Charles A. Fowler announced the hiring of Dr. Jonathan Akin as the institution’s new vice president for Church Relations and Campus Ministries.
Akin currently serves as the director of Leadership Development for the North American Mission Board. He also leads NAMB’s Timothy+Barnabas Institute, which has become one of the most effective equipping and mentoring ministries for young pastors.
In addition, Akin serves as the interim pastor at First Baptist Church, Naples, Fla. He will continue in this role until the church secures a pastor.
“Since I arrived in Jefferson City, I have been searching for a vice president for Church Relations and Campus Ministries,” said Fowler. “This position is such a critical role at Carson-Newman.”
Fowler explained that he had taken his time in filling the role to ensure the right person was found for the created position. “My desire for the person filling this role was for them to have a PhD and have enough scholarly work to be viewed as a colleague among our faculty,” said Fowler. “I wanted them to have served as a senior pastor so that area pastors would view them as a pastor and friend. I also wanted someone nationally recognized so their association would open doors with churches and attract students.” [Read more…]

JEFFERSON CITY — Carson-Newman University announced plans to continue with in-person classes and increased student activities in the fall semester.
Understanding students’ need for fellowship and togetherness, C-N found alternative ways during this school year to meet in-person and online for classes, campus events, chapel and athletic events.

JEFFERSON CITY — Carson-Newman University’s board of trustees approved a five-year strategic plan on April 23 that calls for new academic programs, expanded athletic offerings, new and renovated facilities, enrollment growth and greater missional alignment.
The university’s executive leadership team led the development of the plan, entitled “Acorns to Oaks: Pursuing God’s Preferred Future,” following the board of trustees’ approval of the planning process in April 2020.
“The entire University engaged in the planning process. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, administration, trustees, and other constituent groups helped dream this dream. It has resulted in a strategic plan that is bold in scope, faithful to our mission, academically driven, and Christ-centered in its approach,” said C-N president Charles A. Fowler. [Read more…]

JEFFERSON CITY — Carson- Newman University has begun a unique initiative to encourage and spiritually uplift high school students as they work through their college admission and selection process.
The initiative involves sending out devotional messages to students and parents who are considering joining the Eagle family.
Aaron Porter, C-N’s vice president for enrollment management, said the campaign started because the school wants to inspire prospective students during these difficult times.
“We realized that students had been suffering due to the hard times we are facing, and we wanted to find a unique way to inspire them,” he said. [Read more…]

Carson-Newman University’s online graduate education program is the best in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report. The University’s online MBA program is also the top-ranked private school program. Kieran Showler-Davis completed Carson-Newman’s graduate education program in May 2020 is now an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University.
JEFFERSON CITY — Carson-Newman University’s online graduate education program is the best in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Additionally, Carson-Newman remains the state’s highest-ranked private school in the “Best Online MBA Program” category.
The 2021 Best Online Programs rankings, released today, placed C-N’s online graduate education program as No. 1 in the state and #126 in the nation.
“Our Carson-Newman graduates are often recognized as the best educators in the state, so this top ranking is just another excellent affirmation that our faculty are preparing students to fulfill their full potential,” said University President Charles A. JEFFERSON CITY — There have been moments this year when it has felt like no news has been the only good news.
Carson-Newman University’s admissions team saw how the pressures and uncertainty of the pandemic and resulting economic turmoil have weighed on young adults and wanted to find a way to bring a little joy to at least one family.
The university requested nominations for high school seniors who persevered despite this year’s difficulties. The winning senior received a weekend getaway in the Smokies. C-N received testimonials about dozens of high school seniors across the region. [Read more…]

JEFFERSON CITY — More than 200 students with Carson-Newman University participated in an annual day of service, albeit with a lot of changes from years past.
The university participates in Operation Inasmuch each fall semester, with hundreds of students traditionally volunteering to serve on-site with dozens of community partners throughout East Tennessee.
As with so many other things this year, the pandemic required a shift from tradition since many organizations are not taking on-site volunteers. This year, the event took place Wednesday, Oct. 7, and involved mostly virtual acts of service. The university canceled classes so students could participate. [Read more…]

JEFFERSON CITY — Carson-Newman University is celebrating a record enrollment this year with 2,911 students.
The university last broke its highest enrollment record just last year with 2,725 students.
Carson-Newman attributes this year’s continued growth to record graduate enrollment. Last fall, the new record set was 885 graduate students.
This fall, the university welcomed 1,189 graduate students.
“Record enrollment is something to celebrate, especially during these challenging days,” President Charles A. Fowler said. “These are more than just numbers. Thankfully, record enrollment represents the largest number of students in our history who are being influenced by our distinctive Christ-centered education.” [Read more…]

JEFFERSON CITY — Carson-Newman University President Charles A. Fowler shared with students, faculty and staff how the University’s mission must become the prevalent navigational influence on the school’s future and determine the assessment of effectiveness as an institution.
The address came during this year’s Convocation ceremony, held at Burke-Tarr Stadium to allow for social distancing due to the pandemic. The annual ceremony celebrates the senior class and serves as a faith-filled marker to begin the academic year.
Fowler emphasized the role of the University’s mission in delivering a Christ-centered education to students, stating: “It’s why we exist.” [Read more…]
