Tennessee WMU Elects Exec

MOUNT JULIET — Vickie Lynn Anderson was unanimously elected executive director/treasurer of Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union Nov. 1.

Anderson currently is associate director/ministry specialist for missions growth and leadership development for Tennessee WMU. She has been on the staff for 20 years.

She was elected to the role by the Executive Board of Tennessee WMU from about 50 candidates. Candy Phillips, current executive director, will retire Dec. 31 after serving for 12 years. Formerly Phillips was president for four years. [Read more…]

Platt Elected to Lead IMB

ROCKVILLE, Va. — Alabama Baptist pastor and noted author David Platt has been elected president of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board.

Platt’s election took place Aug. 27 during a trustee meeting held at the IMB’s International Learning Center in Rockville, Va.

Platt, 36, pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Ala., will take office effective immediately as president of the 169-year-old Southern Baptist missions entity, the largest denominational missionary-sending body among American evangelicals. More than 4,800 Southern Baptist international missionaries serve world-wide. [Read more…]

Helping Former Inmates in Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio — Is Defiance the best place to have a ministry to former inmates?

Yes, says Pastor John, as he is known here. He’s heard the joke about his home town and ministry before. But the reality here is much more serious, he added, and has nothing to do with the French-American War which led to the name of the town.

“We’re not really all that defiant here. We are defying the odds every day, every time we try to help somebody get started again,” said John Cattell, pastor/director, The Disciple’s House, which helps many inmates who come through the 600-bed Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio in nearby Stryker.
