BROWNSVILLE BAPTIST COUNTS ON SENIOR ADULTS

September 6, 2024

By Carolyn Tomlin
B&R contributing writer

Connerley

BROWNSVILLE — When Brownsville Baptist needs something done, pastor emeritus Bob Connerley knows he can count on senior adults to see it accomplished.

“One of the reasons is they have a lifetime of being part of Brownsville Baptist — beginning in the Cradle Roll Department. They are always ready to serve in any capacity needed,” said Connerley who served as pastor of the congregation from 1989-2021. He continues to serve at the church in various capacities including working with senior adults.

“This is a most unusual group of seniors,” he said. “Many of these people have known each other all their lives. Their families were friends — even before they were born. They’ve grown up in the church and have really become a close-knit community of people who love the Lord and enjoy being together.”

Emily Higgenbottom, a member of the senior group, is an example of one who has returned to Brownsville after living away for several years.  [Read more…]

WHY BCM IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR CHURCH

September 5, 2024

By Rodney Norvell
Collegiate Ministry Specialist • University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Norvell

Baptist college and university work has been a mission of Southern Baptists for over 100 years.  Whether you know it as the Baptist Young People’s Union, Baptist Student Union (BSU) or Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) the mission is still important and critical to the future of Baptists and your church.

BCM was started for many reasons but really championed our denomination, its work, and the local church. Baptists knew that colleges and universities often presented a challenge to faith, and students needed to have a strong biblical influence at such a critical time in their development while they were away from home.  They also knew that students were not the church of tomorrow — they are the church today.  Here are just a few reasons why BCM is on a mission to help your church connect with students.

Number one is discipleship and spiritual growth. Learning to follow Christ is a life-long journey and does not stop after you are baptized.  Developing spiritual disciplines and habits, such as daily Bible reading, prayer life and worship, without parental guidance is critical to creating mature followers of Christ. BCM focuses on students making disciples that make disciples.  [Read more…]

Leslie Strange, director of the Embrace Grace ministry at Judson Baptist Church, Nashville, leads a devotion for single mothers. Also in the photo, far left, is Beth Moore, compassion ministry specialist for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.

FRANKLIN — Single women who decide against abortion and choose to have their babies often have nowhere to turn. That’s where Embrace Grace comes in.

Embrace Grace is a national ministry designed to make sure that “every young woman who is experiencing an unplanned pregnancy has a church family to go to for spiritual, emotional and physical support,” said Leslie Strange, director of the Embrace Grace ministry at Judson Baptist Church in Nashville.

The national ministry equips local churches to host 12-week-long support groups where women can come who are experiencing the challenges of being single mothers can come for help and emotional support.

“Many of the women when they first come to us are in desperate need of community. They feel very lonely. They feel very isolated. They don’t have great relationship with their own mothers. They don’t have a lot of family supports,” said Strange, who began the program at Judson after hearing a sermon where the speaker challenged those who were present to find places around their church where the gospel needed to be shared. TENN. DEAF CHURCH REACHES STATE — AND BEYOND

BRENTWOOD — All are welcome to attend Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church. Be warned, though. You’re going to be able to hear the worship well before you enter the sanctuary.

“Everything we do is voice-interpreted, which is for who we call the ‘signing-impaired,’” Pastor Aric Randolph told Baptist Press. He’s referring to guests or others who hear but may not know American Sign Language (ASL). “If you visit us, everything is still voiced for you.”

The gospel is for everyone, and thus, a message everyone should be able to access. That can be difficult for deaf people, though. Many of BBDC’s attendees and members drive from considerable distances. The only other deaf churches in the state, Randolph said, are in Memphis, Knoxville and Clarksville.

The start of Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church goes back to 1984, when Brentwood Baptist Church began an outreach for the Deaf. That grew into a congregation the following year. In its own building on the east side of the BBC campus, Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025. [Read more…]

SISTERS HAVE BEEN ‘PLAYING FOR THE LORD’ FOR 41 YEARS

September 2, 2024

By Ralph Vaughn
Ward’s Grove Baptist Church

Kathy Ward, standing, and her sister, Juanita Scott, have served as the musicians for Ward’s Grove Baptist Church in Milton for 41 years.

MILTON — Sisters Juanita Scott and Kathy Ward have shared their love for each other and their love for the Lord through their fingers making music via the organ and piano at Ward’s Grove Baptist Church in Milton, near Murfreesboro, for 41 years.

Ward, the younger of the two, gave her heart to the Lord in 1963 at Calvary Baptist Church. She explains, “My mother said I could not be baptized because of my young age.” After her mother died in 1983 Ward began going to Ward’s Grove.

Six-months later, Ward and her daughter, Tammie Marie, were both baptized there.” She immediately began playing the organ. “They needed someone to play. I said yes and have been playing ever since.” [Read more…]

SEPT. 8: PURPOSE ABANDONED

September 2, 2024

By Joshua Moore
Pastor, First Baptist Church, Sharon

Focal Passage: Psalm 8:1-6, 14:1-7

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeGod’s creative purpose for this world and humanity is greater than any fulfillment we can find ourselves.  Because of the Fall, however, mankind has rejected God’s ideal and sought selfish ways to find meaning in life.  As we studied last week, this only leads to frustration and despair.  Only when we seek the Lord shall we find true and lasting purpose in our lives.

God created a world of purpose. The Lord is majestic and magnificent in His creation! The beauty of Psalm 8 is that God finds His glory and majesty in creating humanity.  Genesis 1:26 illustrates God’s desire to create man and woman in His image and to maintain an eternal relationship with us. As King David writes this Psalm, he stands in awe of God’s handiwork. The more we observe the heavens, we grow astounded at the grandeur and immensity of the cosmos the Lord has fashioned.   [Read more…]

SEPT. 8: THE TASK

September 2, 2024

By Darrell Nimmo
Retired Tennessee pastor

Focal Passage: Acts 13:42-52

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleIn this study, we find that Paul and Barnabas have left Paphos and traveled to Perga in Pamphylia  (modern-day Turkey). John Mark was the cousin of Barnabas and had accompanied them as a helper according to Luke in Acts 13:5.

It was here that John Mark abandoned Paul and Barnabas and returned to Jerusalem. Luke gives no details as to why he left. We do not know what role he played, but his departure created some difficulty for the missionary team. So much so, that later a division developed between Paul and Barnabas when Barnabas wanted to take him with them again on their second missionary journey. As a result of this division, Barnabas took John Mark and returned to Cyprus and Paul took Silas and headed toward Syria.

The missionary team did not stay in Perga, but traveled on to Pisidian Antioch. It is believed they arrived several days before the events Luke describes in the passage. By this time, no doubt the two had made introductions and had some communication with the rulers, and/or, leaders of the synagogue.  [Read more…]
