THANK YOU, LORD, FOR TOMORROW

August 27, 2024

By Ray Van Neste
Dean of theology and missions, vice president for university ministries, Union University

Van Neste

When our children were young, it was fairly common for the youngest child to delight in saying the blessing before meals.

When our youngest, Timothy, was 4 years old he often eagerly asked to say the blessing. His prayers developed, of course, moving first from unintelligible to intelligible and then adding and substituting topics. At one point a new item began appearing in his prayers. He began, in his list of things for which he gave thanks, saying, “Thank you for tomorrow.”

This was striking to me the first time I heard it and I am still not sure what exactly he meant by it. Most likely he melded in a humorous way some different things he had heard us pray. But I did not correct him. It is good theology whether he realized it or not. [Read more…]

ACTS 2:17 INITIATIVE ENTERS CRUCIAL EARLY STAGE

August 26, 2024

By David Dawson
Communications specialist, TBMB

FRANKLIN — The next 10 weeks will have a significant impact in the work of Tennessee Baptists for the next 10 years.

Next month, TBMB Board of Directors will gather for their semiannual meeting and one of the items on their agenda will be to review a report on the Acts 2:17 Initiative. The Board will also consider a recommendation from the Budget Committee that will reflect the needed investment in the plan from Convention churches.’

If the report is affirmed by the board, it will then be presented to TBC messengers in November at the 2024 Summit.

Randy C. Davis, president and executive director of the TBMB, has said he believes the Acts 2:17 Initiative “could become the most consequential process in the Tennessee Baptist Convention’s history. ” [Read more…]

SEPT. 1: SENT

August 26, 2024

By Darrell Nimmo
Retired Tennessee pastor

Focal Passage: Acts 13:1-12

Sunday School Lessons explore the bibleI have served in several churches during my 40-plus years of ministry, range from three to eight years to my longest ministry at one church of 14 years. I once was asked, “If you love a church and its congregation, and they love you, why leave and go somewhere else and start all over?”

There are many reasons pastors would give, some of which would have negative connotations in certain instances. But I have been blessed and personally never left any church under duress. The only difficulty I experienced with each change was the heartache of leaving those you have come to love. And, the only reason I left was because I felt the Holy Spirit calling me to another place of ministry. This week’s lesson talks about that very thing.

Beginning in Acts 13:1, Luke mentions several prophets and teachers, Barnabas and Saul being two among them. That is significant because these men were the pillars and posts of the church leadership in the church at Antioch. Losing any of these individuals would significantly impact the church. Later we will see that God’s desire for Barnabas and Saul would come to the attention of the congregation through probably the prophets among them. The congregation would need this leadership to determine God’s will for not only Barnabas and Saul, but for the church as well. [Read more…]

SEPT. 1: PURPOSE QUESTIONED

August 26, 2024

By Joshua Moore
Pastor, First Baptist Church, Sharon

Focal Passages: Ecclesiastes 1:1-14

Sunday School Lesson Bible Studies For LifeWe begin a six-week study on living a life focused on God’s purpose for our lives. To live a life of true meaning, everyone must first understand the futility of life without faith in God.

Every human searches for meaning and significance. The problem is that we search in every way other than the one leading to lasting fulfillment. This week’s lesson illustrates the meaninglessness of living in a world devoid of God.

Hustle and bustle and no purpose.  The opening verse of Ecclesiastes startles with the assertion that there is no meaning in life. This book serves as a philosophical questioning of the very meaning of life. Its tone from the outset presents a very negative picture, as Solomon asks the rhetorical question, “What does a person gain from all his efforts?” The answer is a resounding, “No!”   [Read more…]

‘CAREFREE’ DAYS GO BY QUICKLY; USE WISELY!

August 23, 2024

By Adam Dooley
Pastor • Englewood Baptist Church • Jackson

Dooley

Returning to school each fall always evokes a bit of murmuring from my children. Sleeping in, trips to the beach, and free time with friends is admittedly more fun than studying algebra and writing book reports. I get it.

What most children and teenagers do not realize, however, is that the revolving semesters of these years represent a season of life that not only passes far too quickly, but also allows a freedom and playfulness that life’s latter stages do not afford.

Youth offers numerous opportunities. Scripture’s wisest man, King Solomon, explained, “Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood. And follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes (Ecclesiastes 11:9a).” His point is that not that we are free to do anything, but that everything changes as we age. [Read more…]

BURDENED LEADERS AND BOLD PRAYERS

August 22, 2024

By Jay Hardwick
President • Tennessee Baptist Convention

Hardwick

I don’t know about you, but every time I open a social media app, scan news headlines, or watch a news channel, I feel an ache in my heart, a pit in my stomach and a burden in my soul.

Bad news. Tragic events. Vitriolic debate. Threats and predictions of more to come. And it seemingly never ends. Recently, as I scanned a newspaper and felt all these emotions, I had a thought — “I wonder if this is a little bit what Nehemiah felt when he got that bad report about the status of Jerusalem?”

You know Nehemiah’s story. While serving as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, he was worried about Jerusalem. He received a terrible report from his brother. The people are downcast, the city is in shambles, and the walls and gates are on fire. The place and people meant to be a beacon for the glory of God were far from it. [Read more…]

CHURCHES MUST BE READY WHEN A CRISIS STRIKES

August 21, 2024

By Lonnie Wilkey
Editor, Baptist & Reflector

FRANKLIN — The question is not what to do if a crisis strikes, it is being prepared when your church faces a crisis, said Chris Turner, director of communications for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board.

“There are two types of organizations — those that have had a crisis and those whose crisis hasn’t hit yet,” Turner said.

Turner was featured recently on the “Tennessee Golden Hour,” a podcast produced by the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board and hosted by TBMB staff members Matt Tullos and Beth Moore.

Turner noted there are two types of crises — those that are sudden and those that are smoldering. A sudden crisis is one that is totally unexpected such as a tornado destroying the church building, he said.  [Read more…]

GREEAR, OTHERS CHALLENGE AUTHOR’S ‘WOKE’ ALLEGATIONS AS SOCIAL MEDIA DEBATE CONTINUES

August 21, 2024

Editor’s note: This article first appeared in The Baptist Paper and is reprinted with permission.

Amid an ongoing — and at times heated — debate on social media, former Southern Baptist Convention president J.D. Greear is among several dozen individuals named in a contentious new book, “Shepherds for Sale” by author Megan Basham

Greear, in a lengthy response to the book, noted, “… we serve a God of truth and if the errors regarding me in this book are any indication of its broader accuracy, then the reader should be cautious about taking her claims at face value.”

“How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda” is the subtitle of Basham’s book, published by the Broadside Books imprint of HarperCollins on July 30.

Reflecting the “wokeism” debate in contemporary culture, Basham writes in the hardbound book’s dust jacket that “in recent decades … well-funded forces from outside the church have been sowing seeds of discord from behind the scenes … to co-opt the church for political purposes.” [Read more…]

CHRISTIAN MOVIES USEFUL AS EVANGELISM TOOL, CHURCHGOERS SAY

August 20, 2024

By Myriah Snyder
Writer, Lifeway Christian Resources

BRENTWOOD — Not only are churchgoers watching Christian movies, but some find them useful as an evangelistic and discipleship tool.

A recent study by Lifeway Research finds 68 percent of American Protestant churchgoers have watched a Christian movie in the last year. Around 4 in 5 (81 percent) say Christian movies are effective evangelism tools.

“The Forge,” the latest film from the Kendrick brothers, releases in theaters nationwide on August 23, 2024. The movie focuses on issues central to evangelism and discipleship. Stephen Kendrick, co-producer of “The Forge,” believes Christian movies can play a role in those fundamental aspects of the Christian walk.

“We live in a visual, video-driven generation. Movies can be great tools to reach people where they are and share biblical truth in the context of an emotional and memorial story,” Kendrick said. “Countless people have come to Christ through watching a Christian movie. The Holy Spirit continues to use art to point to the glory of Christ and the gospel.” [Read more…]
