A NEW AND EXCITING FUTURE FOR CARSON-NEWMAN

Charles Fowler admits he was surprised when he was informed last fall that his name had been put forward as a nomination to be the next president of Carson-Newman University. When I heard the news, I wasn’t the least bit surprised.

I’ve known Charles for years. He is a gracious leader possessing a long and strong identity with, and understanding of, Tennessee Baptists. He has outstanding academic credentials, a pastor’s heart and a theologian’s mind. The CNU presidential search committee did an outstanding job of cultivating excellent candidates for the position and diligently prayed over and vetted each candidate. Just as I wasn’t surprised by Dr. Fowler’s nomination, I wasn’t surprised at the news of his selection. He started his new role July 1. [Read more…]

SHOW OF SOLIDARITY AT UNION

JACKSON — Union University’s art department is building a sculpture to show solidarity with those whose churches have been destroyed in recent months.

Lee Benson, university professor of art and department chair, said the new sculpture was initially envisioned to stand in solidarity with the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris after a fire broke out there in April. He said it was expanded to honor six African-American churches that were burned in Louisiana in April and March and the churches destroyed in Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka. [Read more…]

UNION TRUSTEES APPROVE BUDGET, CELEBRATE OLIVER’S ANNIVERSARY

JACKSON — Union University trustees at their April 26 meeting approved a $95.7 million budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, including nearly $2 million in additional financial aid for students.

Trustees also approved a number of Union faculty members for promotions and tenure and celebrated the five-year anniversary of Union President Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver and his wife Susie. [Read more…]

UNION’S CAMPBELL BECOMES QUICKEST TO 600 WINS

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Mark Campbell, head women’s basketball coach at Union University, earned his 600th career victory Jan. 10 with the Lady Bulldogs’ win at Auburn University at Montgomery.

Campbell became the fastest college basketball coach in history, across all divisions, to reach 600 wins.  [Read more…]

UNION, NEW MEXICO BAPTISTS TO PROVIDE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

JACKSON — Union University has begun a partnership with the Baptist Convention of New Mexico that will place students in New Mexico churches for mentoring by local pastors during the summer.

UNION TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR BICENTENNIAL PLANNING COMMITTEES

JACKSON, Tenn. — Union University is accepting applications for committees that will plan events for the university’s bicentennial during the 2022-2023 academic year.
