DEATHS

Wilkey M. Jones Sr., a Baptist minister for 57 years and member of First Baptist Church, Decaturville, died Oct. 11 at the age of 84. He served on the staff of Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes in Brentwood for eight years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katie Sue McKee Jones. He is survived by his wife, Margie Jones, four children, two step-children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Vernon Woodard, minister of music at Center Point Baptist Church, Springfield, died Nov. 16.

LEADERS

David Ward

David Ward, pastor of Allensville Baptist Church, in Mount Pleasant is the new moderator of Maury Baptist Association, which is comprised of more than 20 Southern Baptist churches.

Bethlehem Baptist Church, Rossville, in Fayette Baptist Association, called Mike Hollaway as pastor on Nov. 3. Hollaway’s late father, Raymond Hollaway, was a former director of missions in the association.

Point Pleasant Baptist Church, Paris, called Jerry Lee as transitional interim pastor, effective Nov. 13.

Lee Green recently celebrated his 24th anniversary as organist at Eastland Baptist Church, Nashville.

Calvary Baptist Church, Knoxville, has called Shelley Jo Mills as director of family ministries.

Kirk Baptist Church, Collierville, recently called Chris Shearin as associate pastor.

Larry Kennon was ordained Oct. 29 as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Macon.

Harold Miller retired Nov. 5 after nine years as pastor of Center Point Baptist Church, Springfield.

John Adams, interim pastor of Spring Hill Baptist Church, Trenton, and former professor at Union University, has co-authored a book, Who Is In Control of the Church with Gayle Alexander. The book is available on Amazon and Kindle.

Maranatha Baptist Church, Humboldt, recently called Larry Simmons as interim pastor.

David Powell is the new pastor of Smyrna Baptist Church, Humboldt.

The churches of Gibson Baptist Association recently recognized and honored Roger Briggs on his 10th anniversary as director of missions.

  • Bethel Baptist Church, Greenfield, packed 647 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, a project led by Jackie Pentecost at the church. David Worley is pastor.
  • North Cleveland Baptist Church, Cleveland, recently celebrated the retirement of $2 million in construction debt. In 2008 the church broke ground on a new activities building and simultaneously began major renovations to its preschool and office areas. In August, the church celebrated its 80th Anniversary by giving a special offering of over $25,000.00 to pay off the final amount of its indebtedness. Leading the note burning ceremony is Jay McCluskey, pastor, and church members who helped lead the construction process: Charles Bowlin, Jo Organ, Emily Elliott, Mike Baines, and Patsy Bettis.
  • Ken Kyker, center, recently was honored as pastor emeritus on Nov. 11 at Antioch Baptist Church, Johnson City. He was recognized for 52 years of pastoral ministry in the area. While at Antioch from 1979-90 he baptized nearly 350 people. With him are his wife, Carol Kyker, left, and current Antioch pastor Pete Tackett.
